Summary
A small business owner reads about AI search and assumes it is a game for household names: Wikipedia, Reddit, the big publishers. Then she asks ChatGPT a question in her own niche and sees a specialist blog she has never heard of listed among the sources, next to a government agency and a national magazine.
That matters because authority, the reputation a website builds through links from other sites, takes years to grow. If AI engines cited only high-authority sites, small businesses would have no way in. The question is whether a smaller site can be a source at all, and how many citations it can expect when it is.
It can. 44.9% of the websites ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode cite most often are low-authority sites, and the median cited website scores 318 out of 1,000, barely above the low-authority line. Citations are still concentrated: low-authority sites collect 10.1% of them, while the 3.6% of sites with the highest authority take 34.7%.
What we measured
On September 23, 2026 we asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode 5,417 questions from a US location and recorded every website their answers cited. We took the 10,000 websites cited most often and counted the citations each received across all answers, 348,925 in total.
For each website we looked up its authority score, a number from 0 to 1,000 based on how many sites link to it and how strong those sites are. A site is low authority when it scores under 300. We grouped sites into authority bands and compared each band's share of cited websites with its share of citations. The median is the middle website: half score higher, half lower.
Specialist small sites earn hundreds of citations
Low authority does not rule out heavy citation. Several websites scoring under 300 were cited hundreds of times, among them independent publishers that go deep on one subject: baby gear, barbecue, web hosting, body composition.

The sites on this list share a pattern: a narrow topic covered in depth. babygearlab.com, with an authority score of 294, earned 345 AI citations covering one subject, baby gear. smokedbbqsource.com (291) and thebarbecuelab.com (235) do the same for barbecue. Depth on one subject beats breadth when the question is specific.
What this means for small and mid-size businesses
You can be cited without a famous brand or a huge link profile. Pick a narrow area where you know more than anyone, the services you perform every day, the problems your customers bring you, the products you test, and cover it thoroughly: real prices, clear steps, comparisons and answers to the specific questions people ask.
Authority still raises your ceiling. Sites scoring 400 and above collect most AI citations, so earn links and mentions over time through useful resources, local press and partnerships. Treat the two as one plan: specialist content earns citations now, and the links it attracts build the authority that earns more later.
Start by checking which sources AI engines cite for the questions in your niche, and how strong those sites really are. Often the competition is a specialist blog, not a giant. Working with an ai seo company like Suff Digital helps smaller brands find the topics where they can earn AI citations now while building authority for later.
