    Summary

A family booking a move reads the reviews of three local moving companies on Google's map. The five-star reviews praise careful crews. The one-star reviews tell a different story: a quote that grew on moving day, an extra charge for stairs, a bill higher than expected. Those reviews sit on the Google Business Profile, the free listing that shows a business's reviews, rating, hours, phone number and website in Google Search and Maps.

Hiring movers means handing a stranger everything you own and agreeing a price before the job starts. Customers read reviews for two things: will my belongings arrive safely, and will the final bill match the quote. The answer to the second question shows up clearly in what unhappy customers write.

47.5% of English-language one-star moving company reviews mention price or cost, more than two and a half times the 18.3% that mention rude or unprofessional staff. Movers rate below other businesses, with 17.3% under 4 stars against a 13.8% average, yet they reply to reviews more than most, answering 53.1% of them, 3rd of 18 local business categories.

    What we measured

We used two samples of US moving companies, collected on September 23, 2026. The first is 481 moving company Google Business Profiles, where we recorded the number of reviews, star rating, website, opening hours, description, claim status, business categories and photos. The second is 547 moving companies with at least one review, for which we collected up to 20 of their newest Google reviews, 7,707 in all, with each review's star rating, text and any owner reply. We compare every moving company figure with the average of the 18 local business categories in the same study.

A review mentions price when its text includes words about price, cost or charges, and mentions rude staff when it uses words such as rude, unprofessional or disrespectful. A profile is unclaimed when no owner has verified it with Google, so the business cannot edit the listing. Negative reviews are one- and two-star reviews. The median is the middle business: half have more, half have fewer. The 18-category average is the simple average of the 18 category figures.

Nearly half of one-star mover reviews are about price

    47.5%
of English-language one-star Google reviews of moving companies mention price or cost.

That is close to one in every two angry reviews, and more than two and a half times the 18.3% that mention rude or unprofessional staff. A move is priced before the job and billed after it, so any gap between the estimate and the final invoice lands in the reviews. Moving company reviews are long, averaging 46 words over the last 12 months, because customers walk readers through what happened.

The happy reviews focus on the crew. Of five-star reviews, 38.3% use the word "recommend", 32.2% say "professional" and 13.5% say "friendly". Customers who had a good move talk about care and conduct; customers who had a bad one talk about money.

Movers have lower ratings than most local businesses

The average moving company is rated 4.39 stars, against 4.52 across categories. 17.3% of rated movers sit below 4 stars, against 13.8%, and 23.6% have a perfect 5.0, against 35.7%. On review counts movers are close to average: 51.6% have fewer than 20 reviews (58.2% on average), the median company has 15, and 22.5% have 100 or more, against 20%.

Claiming the listing separates two very different groups. Claimed moving company profiles have a median of 50 reviews, against 1 for unclaimed ones, yet 34.1% of moving company profiles are unclaimed, against a 29.2% average, the basic field where movers trail other businesses most. Among movers with 20 or fewer lifetime reviews, review volume fell 6% over the last 12 months compared with the year before.

Movers reply to reviews more than most trades

Moving companies reply to 53.1% of their recent Google reviews, 3rd of 18 categories, against a 40.5% average, and 42.8% never replied to any of their 20 newest reviews, against 52.8%. The replies favor praise: 56.3% of five-star reviews get an answer, against 34.9% of one- and two-star reviews, though that complaint rate still ranks 5th of 18 and beats the 30.8% average.

Replies are slower than the 4-day average across categories, at 4.9 days on average and a median of 4.1 days. Across all 18 categories, businesses with the most reviews reply the most: 20.5% of businesses with 200 or more reviews never reply, against 81.7% of businesses with fewer than 10.

The top of the map takes over 100 reviews

In a separate Suff Digital study of 3,160 Google Maps searches across 79 US cities, the top three results for "moving company" had a median of 132 reviews, against 79 for listings ranked 4 to 20, and 91.8% linked a website, against 86.1%. Chains held 11.6% of top-three spots, and adding "near me" changed the top three in 45.6% of cities.

What this means for moving companies

Treat pricing as a review problem. Put the estimate in writing, list what can change it (stairs, long carries, packing, extra hours) and walk the customer through the final bill before the crew leaves. When a price complaint does land, reply with the specifics: what was quoted, what changed and what you will do about it.

Claim your listing if you have not, and ask every customer for a review the day after the move, when relief is fresh. The top three map results carry a median of 132 reviews, so volume has to come from every job, not an occasional push. Add photos of your trucks, crews and packing work to reach the 18-photo norm.

Then compare yourself with the movers in your own map results. Suff Digital's local seo packages build review volume and complete Google Business Profiles for moving companies.
