    Summary

A family moves house. The quote said one figure; the bill at the other end says another, with charges for stairs, packing materials and an extra hour. That evening, one of them opens Google and leaves a one-star review, and the review is about money.

One-star reviews are the ones future customers read most carefully, because they show what can go wrong. Knowing what drives them tells a business owner where the real risk lies: not in the quality of the work alone, but in the moments around it, such as the quote, the bill, the wait and how staff treat people.

Price leads by a wide margin. 34.5% of one-star Google reviews mention price or cost, about one in three, against 13.1% of five-star reviews. Complaints about waiting and about rude staff follow, each in about one in five, and rude staff almost never come up when a customer is happy.

    What we measured

On September 23, 2026 we took 9,100 one-star Google reviews written in English with text, from 4,045 US local businesses in 18 categories, out of 130,269 Google reviews of those businesses. We tagged each review for seven topics: price, waiting, rude staff, communication, the manager, scams or fraud, and refunds. A review can raise several topics. We tagged five-star reviews of the same businesses the same way for comparison.

A review mentions price when it talks about price, cost, fees, a quote, a bill or a dollar amount. Waiting covers delays, lateness and time spent waiting. Rude staff covers staff described as rude, unprofessional, disrespectful or condescending. Communication covers calls, call backs and messages. Shares are the percentage of reviews that raise each topic.

    Price leads one-star complaints

    34.5%
of one-star Google reviews mention price or cost.

Money is the most common thread in the angriest reviews: a quote that changed, a fee nobody mentioned, a bill that felt too high. Waiting comes second at 19.6%, rude staff third at 18.4% and communication, such as unreturned calls, fourth at 12.4%. 3.8% of one-star reviews use words such as scam, fraud or rip-off.

    Manager 4.2% 0.7%
    Scam or fraud 3.8% 0.1%
    Refund 2.7% under 0.1%

Price is the most common topic in both kinds of review. In five-star reviews it is praise: a fair quote, a good deal, no surprises. In one-star reviews it is the surprise itself. The difference is usually not the price but whether the customer expected it.

Rude staff almost never appears in good reviews

Rude or unprofessional staff come up in 18.4% of one-star reviews and in 0.6% of five-star reviews, about a 30-fold gap. Scam language shows the same split: 3.8% of one-star reviews against 0.1% of five-star reviews.

How staff treat a customer decides the review almost on its own. A customer can forgive a high price if someone explained it politely, but rudeness turns a disappointment into a one-star review. One-star reviews also give these complaints room: the median English one-star review with text runs 59 words against 31 for a five-star review, so the full story is there for every future customer to read.

The rate varies by category. By the same measure, rude staff appear in 24.7% of one-star reviews of daycares, 24.2% for dentists and 23.7% for real estate agents, but 13.4% for restaurants: services where customers deal closely with staff over time draw the most complaints about them.

Movers and HVAC companies get the most price complaints

    47.5%
of one-star Google reviews of moving companies mention price.

HVAC companies follow at 45%, then veterinarians at 40.3% and auto repair shops at 39.4%. These are services where the final bill depends on work the customer cannot see in advance: how long the move takes, what the technician finds, what the tests show. Daycares (21.3%) and restaurants (21.7%), with fixed and visible prices, draw the fewest price complaints.

For a mover or an HVAC company, nearly every other one-star review is about money. That makes pricing, how it is quoted, explained and changed, the single biggest lever on the reviews these businesses receive.

What this means for local businesses

Price complaints usually come from a gap between what the customer expected and what they paid. Give written quotes, explain before the work starts what could change the final bill, and call the customer before going over the estimate. These steps cost little and target the most common topic in one-star reviews.

Train staff on the moments that turn into reviews: the first call, the arrival, the handover of the bill. Rudeness almost never appears in good reviews and appears in nearly one in five bad ones, so how people are treated at those moments is worth as much as the work itself.

When a price complaint does land, reply with facts, not defensiveness: what was quoted, what changed and why, and what you will do now. Future customers read these exchanges closely. Our local seo packages include tracking review themes and replying to complaints for local businesses.
