Summary
Two brands sell similar products. One is in the news every week, written up in reviews, roundups and trade press; the other rarely makes the headlines. Ask an AI engine for recommendations in their category and the first brand is the one that keeps getting named.
AI engines learn about brands from what is written about them, and they cite articles when they answer. That makes press and web coverage one of the few levers a brand controls that feeds directly into whether AI recommends it. For PR and marketing teams, it turns earned media into a measurable input to AI visibility.
The most-covered quarter of brands is named in 13.4 times as many AI answers as the least-covered quarter. The typical least-covered brand appears in 2 of 56,068 AI answers; the typical most-covered brand appears in 76.
What we measured
In September 2026 we took 300 brands and counted how many times each brand name appears across the web and in the news, a measure of how much has been written about it. We then counted how many of 56,068 answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews named each brand in their text.
We split the 300 brands into four equal groups of 75, quartiles, from least to most coverage, and compared their AI mentions. The average counts every brand in a group; the median is the middle brand, which shows what is typical without being pulled up by a few very popular names. The rank correlation measures whether brands that rank higher for coverage also rank higher for AI mentions, on a scale from 0 (no link) to 1 (a perfect match).
The most covered brands get named 13 times as often
The pattern climbs at every step. The least-covered quarter averages 16.5 AI answers per brand, the next 51.6, the next 104 and the most-covered 220.8. The medians show the same shape even more sharply: 2, 10, 64 and 76 answers. A typical brand in the bottom quarter is close to invisible in AI answers; a typical brand in the top quarter is a regular name.

The biggest jump in the medians is between the second and third quarters, from 10 answers to 64. Once a brand has built a solid base of coverage, it moves from occasional mentions to regular ones, and AI engines start treating it as one of the names in its category.
A clear positive link
Across all 300 brands, web and news coverage and AI mentions have a rank correlation of 0.46. That is a clear positive relationship: the more a brand is written about, the higher it tends to rank in AI mentions.
| Coverage quartile | Median web and news mentions | Median AI answers |
|---|---|---|
| Least coverage | 26,347 | 2 |
| Second | 487,103 | 10 |
| Third | 1,763,787 | 64 |
| Most coverage | 16,703,054 | 76 |
Coverage volumes differ enormously. The typical brand in the top quarter has 16.7 million web and news mentions, against 26,347 in the bottom quarter, a gap of more than 600 times. AI mentions differ by a smaller factor, 13.4 on average, so AI attention is less lopsided than web coverage, but it still rises with it. A smaller brand does not need to match a household name's coverage to get named; it needs enough to move up a quartile.
What this means for PR and marketing teams
Press and web coverage and AI visibility move together, so earned media now does double duty: it reaches readers directly and it feeds the AI answers they read next. Prioritize coverage that names your brand clearly in the context of your category, such as reviews, roundups, comparisons and trade press, because that is the kind of mention an AI engine can connect to a recommendation.
Track AI mentions next to your coverage numbers. Ask the main AI engines the questions your customers ask, count how often you are named, and check it against your coverage each quarter. If coverage grows but AI mentions do not, look at where it appears, since AI engines draw on some outlets far more than others. Our media relations services target the outlets AI engines cite.
