    Summary

Friends pick a place for dinner on Google Maps. Every option has hundreds of reviews, and the ratings vary more than they would for a dentist or a plumber. One restaurant has replied to a complaint about slow service with an apology and an invitation back. The others have not replied to anything. The friends choose the one that answered.

For a restaurant, the Google Business Profile, the free listing that shows a business's reviews, star rating, hours, menu, photos and website in Google Search and Maps, is where most diners decide. Restaurants collect far more reviews than other businesses, so every rating is built on a big crowd, and every unanswered complaint is read by many future guests.

Restaurants are held to a harder standard than other businesses. 28.8% are rated below 4 stars, about twice the 13.8% average across 18 categories, and 3.5% hold a perfect 5.0, against 35.7%. Half never reply to their recent reviews, and restaurants rank 17th of 18 on the share of reviews that get a reply.

    What we measured

We used two samples of US restaurants, collected on September 23, 2026. The first is 233 restaurant Google Business Profiles, where we recorded the number of reviews, star rating, website, opening hours, description, claim status, business categories and photos. The second is 463 restaurants with at least one review, for which we collected up to 20 of their newest Google reviews, 8,548 in all, with each review's star rating, text and any owner reply. We compare every restaurant figure with the average of the 18 local business categories in the same study.

A restaurant's Google rating is the average of all its customers' star ratings, from 1 to 5. A restaurant "never replied" when none of its 20 newest reviews has a reply from the owner. Negative reviews are one- and two-star reviews. A profile is unclaimed when no owner has verified it with Google. The median is the middle restaurant: half have more, half have fewer. The 18-category average is the simple average of the 18 category figures.

Volume explains much of it. A plumber with a handful of reviews from grateful customers can hold a perfect score; a restaurant with hundreds of reviews from every kind of diner, on busy nights and quiet ones, cannot. Every meal is a fresh chance for a complaint about the food, the wait or the bill, so a restaurant's rating reflects the full range of experiences rather than its best customers.

Restaurants have by far the most reviews

The median restaurant has 214 Google reviews, the most of 18 categories and about eight times the median of 27. 65.2% have 100 or more reviews, against a 20% average, and 15.5% have fewer than 20, against 58.2%. Claimed restaurant profiles have a median of 265 reviews against 28.5 for unclaimed ones.

Restaurants also keep more complete listings than most businesses. 12% are unclaimed, against 29.2%. 19.7% have no website, against 35.1%, and 21.5% have no description, against 43.9%. The median restaurant profile has 202 photos, against a median of 18, and 90.6% list wheelchair access, against 62%.

Smaller restaurants are another story. Among restaurants with 20 or fewer lifetime reviews, review volume fell 19.6% over the last 12 months compared with the year before, and 48.5% received at least a third of their reviews in a single month. In a separate Suff Digital study of 3,160 Google Maps searches across 79 US cities, the top three results for "restaurant" had a median of 498 reviews, against 612 for restaurants ranked 4 to 20, so review count alone does not decide the restaurant map. Chains held 0.4% of top-three spots, and adding "near me" changed the top three in 83.5% of city searches.

    Half of restaurants never reply

50.3% of restaurants never replied to any of their 20 newest reviews, close to the 52.8% average. But restaurants with a reply habit answer only some reviews: across all recent restaurant reviews, 28.4% carry an owner reply, against 40.5% on average, and restaurants rank 17th of 18 on that measure. Those who reply take 4.2 days on average, with a median of 3.1 days.

Restaurants reverse the usual pattern: they reply to 31.9% of one- and two-star reviews, slightly above the 30.8% average and 8th of 18, but to 27.9% of five-star reviews, against 42%. Restaurant owners focus on putting complaints right, which is the right priority, but most of the praise goes unacknowledged.

Restaurant reviews are short, averaging 27.1 words, the shortest of any category. Of English-language one-star reviews, 21.7% mention price or cost and 13.4% mention rude or unprofessional staff. Of five-star reviews, 13.4% say "friendly", 10.8% use "recommend" and 1.1% say "professional". Diners judge the meal and the welcome, in a sentence or two.

    What this means for restaurants

Treat your rating as something you manage every week. With hundreds of reviews, one bad night will not sink a restaurant, but a pattern will. Read new reviews every few days, look for repeated complaints about the same dish, wait or staff member, and fix the cause.

Reply to more reviews, not only the complaints. A short thank-you under five-star reviews, naming the dish or the occasion the guest mentioned, shows diners that the people running the restaurant are paying attention. For complaints, apologize, explain what you are changing and invite the guest back, and aim to reply within a couple of days.

Keep the listing that already works for you current: hours, including holiday hours, your menu, and new photos of dishes and the dining room. Our restaurant seo programs handle reviews, replies and Google Business Profiles for restaurants.
