Summary
Someone searches Google for a dog harness, a linen duvet cover or a yoga mat. Among the retailers and big brands on page one, there is very often an independent store running on Shopify, the platform that powers many small and mid-sized online shops. In some categories they are on almost every search; in others they barely appear.
For a Shopify store owner, that shows where the platform's stores compete on Google and who they are up against. In categories full of Shopify stores, your rivals on page one are other Shopify stores; in the others, you face big retailers and platform owners.
A Shopify store appears on page one for 79% of pet product searches and 79% of home searches, against 13% of gaming searches. Across all product searches the rate is 60.5%, and 1,087 different Shopify stores reach page one. When they rank, they rank well: half of their listings are in the top three.
What we measured
The study covers the top 10 organic Google results (desktop, US) for 3,995 product searches across product categories from apparel to office supplies, collected on September 23, 2026. We then identified the ecommerce platform behind 3,506 of the websites that ranked. For each category we counted the different Shopify stores on page one, their listings, and the share of searches with at least one Shopify store.
A Shopify store is an online store built on Shopify. A page-one listing is one result in the top 10, and a store with two results on one search has two listings. Top-three listings are results in positions 1 to 3, the most visible places on the page. Average position is the mean rank of a platform's listings, from 1 (top) to 10. "WordPress sites without a store" are WordPress websites that do not run the WooCommerce store plugin. Page one means the ten regular results, not ads or shopping boxes.
Shopify is on eight in ten pet and home searches
Pets (79.4% of searches) and home (79.3%) have the highest Shopify presence, followed by fitness at 77.8%. These are categories full of independent brands and specialist shops, and many of them run on Shopify. At the other end, a Shopify store appears on 37% of electronics searches, 20% of phone searches and 13% of gaming searches, where big retailers and the device makers themselves hold most of the page.

Apparel has the most Shopify stores on page one
Counting stores rather than searches, apparel leads: 202 different Shopify stores rank on page one for apparel searches, with 1,034 listings between them. Beauty has 174 Shopify stores, home 163, outdoor 115 and pets 112. In apparel, beauty and home, more than 150 Shopify stores each reach page one, so a Shopify store in those categories is often competing with other Shopify stores.

A store built around one product type often has a collection page that answers a search directly, which helps explain why Shopify stores that rank tend to rank high.
What this means for Shopify store owners
If you sell apparel, beauty, home or pet products, your competition on Google is likely other Shopify stores. Study the ones that rank for your searches: their collection pages, product descriptions and internal links are the benchmark, and they run on the same platform you do, so you can match anything they have built.
If you sell electronics, phones or gaming products, Shopify stores are rare on page one and the bar is set by big retailers and device makers. There, a niche position and specialist content, such as compatibility guides, setup help and honest comparisons, give a smaller store its best chance.
Working with an agency that offers shopify seo services helps you build the collection pages and content that win these searches.
