Questions about investing draw an estimated 5,666 AI searches for every 1,000 Google searches, 5.7 times their Google volume. Money as a whole goes the other way: it makes up 16.2% of estimated AI search demand for 34,571 US keywords, against 26.3% of Google demand for the same keywords, because Americans still take money decisions to Google.

    Summary

Someone who wants a mortgage types "mortgage lenders near me" into Google and starts comparing rates. The same person, a week earlier, asked ChatGPT what an adjustable-rate mortgage is and whether points are worth paying. Both searches are about money, and they happen in different places.

For banks, lenders, insurers and accountants, that split decides where marketing money should go. If the buying searches happen on Google and the learning happens in AI tools, a financial brand needs to be found in both, with different content for each.

The numbers show the split clearly. Questions about investing draw an estimated 5,666 AI searches for every 1,000 Google searches, 5.7 times their Google volume, and tax questions nearly twice theirs. The searches for a lender, bank or insurer go the other way, and they pull money as a whole down to 16.2% of estimated AI search demand across 34,571 US keywords, against 26.3% of Google search demand for the same keywords.

    What we measured

We measured how often 50,000 US keywords are asked in AI tools such as ChatGPT and Google's AI features, using August 2026 monthly estimates collected on September 23, 2026, and matched each keyword to its Google search volume. The set covers 66 topics: 26,933 industry service keywords (such as "mortgage broker" or "IT support company"), 19,465 questions (such as "how do stocks work") and 3,602 "best" product searches. After removing duplicates, 34,571 keywords remained.

AI search demand, or AI search volume, is the estimated number of times a month people ask AI tools about a keyword. A topic's share of AI demand is its part of the total AI volume across all 34,571 keywords, and the same for Google. AI searches per 1,000 Google searches compares the two for the same keywords: a figure above 1,000 means a topic is asked in AI more often than it is searched on Google. Money topics are banking and loans, accounting, insurance, mortgages, taxes, investing, credit and personal finance.

Americans take money questions to AI

    5,666
estimated AI searches for every 1,000 Google searches go to questions about investing.

Questions that explain how money works reverse the usual pattern. Investing questions draw an estimated 5,666 AI searches for every 1,000 Google searches, 5.7 times their Google volume, and general money questions an estimated 5,685. Tax questions draw about 1,900 estimated AI searches per 1,000, nearly twice their Google volume.

A question like "how does a Roth IRA work" or "how are capital gains taxed" needs an explanation, not a list of links, and that is what an AI answer gives. Credit questions (an estimated 693 per 1,000) and mortgage questions (469) sit in between: people still search them on Google, but far more of their demand goes to AI than the 69 of mortgage lender searches. The research that happens before a financial decision is moving to AI first.

Money gets a smaller share of AI demand than of Google demand

    16.2%
of estimated AI search demand for US keywords is about money.

On Google, the same money keywords take 26.3% of search demand, so money's share drops by more than a third when people move from a search box to an AI tool. Money keywords draw an estimated 144 AI searches for every 1,000 Google searches, while all other topics draw 264, nearly twice as many.

Americans take money decisions to Google

The gap comes from the searches people make when they are ready to buy. Mortgage lender and broker keywords draw an estimated 69 AI searches for every 1,000 Google searches, banking and loan keywords 99, insurance keywords 148 and accounting keywords 169. All four sit well below the 264 average for non-money topics.

These are searches for a provider: a lender, a bank, an insurance agent, an accountant. People choosing one want rates, locations, reviews and a phone number, which a Google results page and a map deliver directly. For these industries, most buying-intent demand is still on Google, and search ads and local rankings still decide who gets the call.

IT services, car dealers and food lead AI search demand

Outside money, the biggest topics by estimated AI search demand mix business services with everyday questions. IT services keywords hold 12.5% of all estimated AI search demand and draw an estimated 1,053 AI searches for every 1,000 Google searches, slightly more than on Google. Car dealers follow at 9.6% and food questions at 6.9%.

Food and legal questions show how conversational AI search is. Food questions draw an estimated 54,285 AI searches for every 1,000 Google searches and legal questions 45,214, dozens of times their Google volume. These are the questions people once typed into Google as fragments and now ask an AI tool in full sentences.

What this means for financial services marketers

Keep your search budget on the buying terms. If you sell loans, mortgages, insurance or accounting services, the searches that turn into applications and appointments still happen on Google, so paid search, local rankings and a strong Google Business Profile remain the core of your marketing.

Then build for the questions that come first. Write plain explainers for the questions your customers ask before they buy, such as how a rate is set, what a policy covers or how a tax rule applies, with the answer in the first sentence and a worked example. Those are the pages AI engines cite when someone asks, and they put your name in front of a customer weeks before the Google search. Our financial services seo work maps which of your topics are asked in AI and builds the content that gets cited.
