    Summary

In November, few people are searching for a tax preparer. By February, W-2 forms have arrived and people are typing "tax preparation services", "tax consultant near me" and "tax professional" into Google. An accounting firm that budgets the same amount every month misses most of the year's customers in a few short weeks.

Cost per click, or CPC, is what an advertiser pays each time someone clicks its ad in Google's search results, whether or not that person becomes a client. For an accounting or tax firm, it decides how many prospective clients a budget can reach. When demand swings this hard, the timing of the budget matters as much as its size.

Accounting and tax searches were 14 times higher in February 2026 than in November 2025, the biggest seasonal swing of the 23 industries measured; the next most seasonal, HVAC, swings 2.8 times. The clicks are also expensive: $14.25 on average, 1.3 times the $10.82 average across 18,477 keywords in 23 industries.

    What we measured

In September 2026 we collected Google Ads Keyword Planner prices and monthly search volumes for 44 accounting and tax keywords with a cost per click above zero, each searched at least 2,900 times a month in the US. For those keywords we calculated the average, median and spread of cost per click, the busiest and quietest months, and compared accounting with 18,477 keywords across 23 industries. We also collected state-level prices for the 25 largest US states, and Microsoft Ads prices for the 39 keywords priced on both platforms.

Cost per click is Google's estimate of the average price an advertiser pays for one click on an ad shown for that search. The seasonal swing compares total monthly searches across all 44 keywords in the busiest month with the quietest month. The median is the middle keyword: half cost less, half cost more. Each state is compared with the national price of the keywords priced in that state.

Tax season multiplies demand 14 times

as many accounting and tax searches happen in February as in November.

No other industry comes close. Across the 23 industries measured, accounting has the biggest gap between its busiest and quietest months, at 14.4 times, while the next most seasonal, HVAC, swings 2.8 times. The biggest accounting keywords are the ones that drive the swing: "tax preparation services" is searched 301,000 times a month and costs $10.04 a click, and "tax preparation software" is searched 246,000 times a month at $24.12.

For a firm, this turns the year into two different markets. In the quiet months there are few searches and little competition for them. In tax season, demand multiplies and tax preparers, national chains and software companies all compete for the same people at once.

Tax service searches top the price list

The most expensive accounting keyword is "tax services companies" at $95.57 a click, more than six times the $14.25 accounting average. It is followed by "tax consultant" at $37.55 and "payroll taxes" at $36.73. Searches for a professional, such as "tax consultant near me" ($23.04), "tax professional" ($22.84) and "bookkeeping services near me" ($21.08), sit just below.

Tennessee pays 75% more than the national price

Among the 25 largest states, Tennessee is the most expensive for accounting clicks, 75% above the national price of the same keywords, followed by South Carolina (38% above) and Alabama (17% above). Wisconsin is the cheapest at 27% below, with Massachusetts at 24% below and North Carolina at 13% below.

    Tennessee +75%
    South Carolina +38%
    Alabama +17%
    North Carolina -13%
    Massachusetts -24%
    Wisconsin -27%

Microsoft Ads charges 75% less for the same searches

For the 39 accounting keywords priced on both platforms, a click on Microsoft Ads, which shows ads on Bing search, costs $3.15 on average against $12.70 on Google Ads, 75% less. The same budget buys about four times as many visits on Bing, which matters most in the weeks when Google prices are highest.

What this means for accounting and tax firms

Budget for tax season, not for the calendar. With 14 times as many searches in February as in November, a flat monthly budget is far too small in the busy months and wasted in the fall. Concentrate spend from January to April, and use the quiet months for year-round services such as bookkeeping and payroll, where the searches are steadier.

Put your offer where the expensive clicks land. Searches such as "tax consultant" and "tax professional" cost more than $20 a click, so send them to a page that makes booking a consultation simple and states your prices or starting fees. Expect to pay more in Tennessee and South Carolina, and copy your best campaigns to Microsoft Ads, where the same keywords cost 75% less.

A google ads agency that shifts budget with the tax calendar keeps a firm visible in the weeks when clients are actually looking.
