Summary
A small business owner gets a letter from the tax authority in March and needs an accountant this week. A referral would be ideal, but there isn't one, so she searches for a CPA near her office, reads the firms on Google's first page and calls the one that looks like it handles businesses like hers.
Search engines rely on a few basic signals to understand what a page is about: a page title, a short description, a main heading, a secure connection and schema markup, code that states in machine-readable terms that this is an accounting firm, what services it offers, where it is and how to reach it. They cost almost nothing to add and help Google's results and its AI answers describe the firm correctly.
Accounting firms miss more of these signals than any of 15 industries. 97% of accounting firm websites don't use AccountingService schema, and 52.2% have no schema at all. 53.1% miss at least one of the four basics on their homepage, the worst rate of the 15, and more than a third have no main H1 heading.
What we measured
In September 2026 we took 294 accounting firm websites listed on US Google Business Profiles and checked each homepage for four basics: a title tag, the page name shown as the blue link in search results; a meta description, the summary Google can show under that link; at least one H1 heading, the main headline on the page; and HTTPS, the secure connection shown by the padlock in a browser. A site fails the basic check if its homepage misses any of the four.
We also recorded whether the homepage title was too long to show in full on Google, whether any page on the site could not be added to Google's index, whether the site had an XML sitemap, the file that lists a site's pages for search engines, and which schema types each site used. Schema markup is code that states in machine-readable terms what a business is, where it is and what it does. We ran the same checks on websites in 15 industries, from accounting to HVAC, so each accounting figure can be compared with the 15-industry average.
Almost no accounting websites tell Google they are an accounting firm
Schema.org, the shared vocabulary Google and other search engines read, has a type made for accounting firms: AccountingService. It lets a firm state its name, services, address, phone number and hours in a form search engines can use directly. Only 3% of accounting firm websites use it, about one in 33.
Most accounting websites have no schema of any kind: 52.2%, the highest rate of 15 industries and well above the 32.9% average. The schema that accounting websites do use is mostly what a website builder or SEO plugin adds automatically: WebSite (on 38% of accounting firm websites), BreadcrumbList (24%), SearchAction (23%) and ListItem (23%). 14.2% use any local business type, the family of schema types that marks a site as a business with a location.
Half of accounting websites miss a basic SEO element
That is the highest rate of the 15 industries, 15 points above the 37.9% average. Accounting homepages trail the average on every one of the four basics: 36.1% have no H1 heading (against 24.5%), 31.6% have no meta description (against 23%), 3.1% have no title tag (against 2.8%) and 4.4% don't use HTTPS (against 2.2%), twice the average rate.

A site without HTTPS shows a "not secure" warning in most browsers, a poor first impression for a firm that asks clients to send financial documents. Beyond the homepage, 22.1% of accounting firm websites have no XML sitemap, against an 18.3% average. Only 11.2% have a page Google cannot add to its index, better than the 15.2% average.
Accounting ranks last of 15 industries
Across the 15 industries, the share of websites failing at least one basic check runs from 26% for HVAC companies to 53.1% for accounting firms. Accounting firms have the highest rate, followed by manufacturing (48.5%), restaurants (46.2%) and real estate (45.4%).

WordPress runs 38.8% of accounting firm websites, and accounting sites on WordPress fail the basic checks 54.4% of the time, about the same as accounting websites overall. Fewer than half of accounting firm websites, 47.8%, have a tap-to-call phone link on their pages, so a prospect reading on a phone often cannot call with one tap.
What this means for accounting firms
Fix the homepage basics first: a title with your main service and city in under about 60 characters, a meta description that says who you help, one H1 and HTTPS across the whole site. Then do the same for each service page, such as tax preparation, bookkeeping and payroll, so each one can rank for its own searches.
Next, add AccountingService schema with your firm name, services, address, phone number and hours. Fewer than one accounting website in 30 has it, so it is one of the easiest ways to stand out to Google and AI answers when a prospect searches for a CPA nearby. Make your phone number a tap-to-call link on every page. Our accountant seo work starts with exactly these checks.
