    Summary

An engineer needs a supplier for precision-machined aluminum parts. She searches for the process, the material and a region, opens the manufacturers on Google's first page and checks capabilities, certifications and tolerances before sending a request for quote. For a manufacturer, that search is often the first and only chance to get onto a buyer's shortlist.

Search engines need a few basic signals to understand what a page is about: a page title, a short description, a main heading and a secure connection. They also read the alt text on images and schema markup, code that states in machine-readable terms what a business is and what it makes. These cost almost nothing to add and decide whether a page about a capability can be found for that capability.

Manufacturers miss those basics more often than almost any other industry. 48.5% of manufacturing websites miss at least one of the four basic elements on their homepage, second only to accounting firms among 15 industries and more than ten points above the 37.9% average. The most common gap is the main heading, missing on 34.6% of manufacturing homepages.

    What we measured

In September 2026 we took 610 manufacturing websites listed on US Google Business Profiles and checked each homepage for four basics: a title tag, the page name shown as the blue link in search results; a meta description, the summary Google can show under that link; at least one H1 heading, the main headline on the page; and HTTPS, the secure connection shown by the padlock in a browser. A site fails the basic check if its homepage misses any of the four.

We also recorded whether the homepage title was too long to show in full on Google, whether any page on the site could not be added to Google's index, whether the site had an XML sitemap, the file that lists a site's pages for search engines, whether homepage images had alt text, and which schema types each site used. We ran the same checks on websites in 15 industries, so every manufacturing figure can be compared with the 15-industry average, the simple average of the 15 industry rates.

Manufacturers have the second highest failure rate of 15 industries

    48.5%
of manufacturing websites miss at least one basic SEO element on their homepage.

Across the 15 industries, the share of websites failing at least one basic check runs from 26% for HVAC companies to 53.1% for accounting firms. Manufacturers come second, ahead of restaurants (46.2%), real estate (45.4%) and financial advisors (44.8%).

    HVAC 26% 23.9%

The gap between the top and bottom of the table is wide: HVAC companies, at 26%, fail the basic checks about half as often as manufacturers. The trades at the bottom, HVAC, roofing, plumbing and dental, also have the lowest rates of missing schema, from 21.7% to 26.5%, so the industries that get the basics right tend to add schema too. Manufacturers are behind on both.

One in three manufacturing homepages has no main heading

34.6% of manufacturing homepages have no H1 heading, ten points above the 24.5% average across 15 industries and the most common basic problem. A homepage without an H1 leaves search engines to guess what the company does from the rest of the page. Missing meta descriptions come next, on 25.2% of manufacturing homepages, against a 23% average.

22.6% of manufacturing websites have at least one page Google cannot add to its index, against a 15.2% average, and 21.3% have no XML sitemap, against 18.3%. A capability or product page that Google cannot index will never appear for the search it was written for. WordPress runs 39.7% of manufacturing websites, and manufacturing sites on WordPress fail the basic checks 42.6% of the time, below the 48.5% rate for manufacturers overall.

Two thirds of manufacturing homepages have images with no description

    65.4%
of manufacturing homepages have images with no alt text.

Alt text is the short written description attached to an image. Screen readers read it aloud to people who cannot see the page, and search engines use it to understand what the picture shows. Manufacturing homepages lead the 15 industries on missing alt text, which matters for a sector that sells with photos of machines, parts, facilities and finished products.

Schema is the other gap. 37.1% of manufacturing websites have no schema markup at all, above the 32.9% average, and 2.3% use Product schema, fewer than one in 43. The schema manufacturing websites do use is mostly what a website builder or SEO plugin adds automatically: WebSite (51% of manufacturing websites), SearchAction (36%), ListItem (35%) and BreadcrumbList (34%). Those types describe a website's structure, not what the company makes.

    What this means for manufacturers

Give each capability, process and product line its own page, with a title, a meta description and one H1 that name what you make and how: "CNC machining of aluminum and titanium parts" tells a buyer and a search engine far more than "Capabilities". Add alt text to every photo of your equipment, parts and facility, describing what it shows in plain words. Then add Organization schema to the homepage and Product schema to product pages.

Next, check that every page you want found is in your XML sitemap and none is blocked from Google's index by mistake, especially older product pages and PDF spec sheets. Suff Digital's manufacturing seo work starts with these checks, because they are the cheapest ranking gains a manufacturer has.
