Summary
Ask an AI engine how to sell a house without a realtor and you get the steps, the paperwork and the risks. Then comes the last line, an offer to list the exact forms if you say which state you are in. The answer is finished, but the conversation is not.
That closing line matters because it is where a general question turns into a specific one. The person who answers it shares their location, budget or situation, and the next answer is narrower: a particular product, a local provider, a named service. For a business, that second answer is where recommendations get specific, and where being clearly described pays off.
AI engines do this almost every time. 80% of AI answers end with a follow-up question or an offer to help further. Google AI Mode does it in 90.2% of answers and ChatGPT in 68.7%, and each engine has its own signature way of asking.
What we measured
On September 23, 2026 we asked 2,984 everyday questions in 31 topics, from money and insurance to recipes and weather, to five AI engines: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews (the AI summary above Google's search results). That produced 25,940 answers.
An answer counts as ending with a follow-up when its final paragraph asks the user a question or offers more help, with phrases such as "Would you like", "If you want, I can", "Let me know" or "Tell me your". We also recorded whether the answer's very last character is a question mark, and which closing phrase each engine uses most.
Four in five AI answers ask for more
AI answers are built to keep the conversation going. Four answers in five close by asking for more detail or offering a next step: a more specific plan, a comparison, a calculation, a template. One answer in five ends when the information does.
For the person asking, the follow-up is a prompt to share more about their situation. For the AI engine, each extra detail narrows the question it has to answer next. A general question about home insurance becomes a question about a named state, a type of home and a budget, and the answer that follows can recommend specific providers.
Google AI Mode almost always asks for more
Every engine ends most answers this way. Google AI Mode (90.2%) and Gemini (86.4%) are the most persistent, Google AI Overviews follow at 80.5%, and ChatGPT (68.7%) and Perplexity (70.8%) still do it in about seven answers in ten.

| AI engine | Ends with a follow-up or offer | Ends on a question mark |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Mode | 90.2% | 45.1% |
| Gemini | 86.4% | 75% |
| Google AI Overviews | 80.5% | 20.9% |
| Perplexity | 70.8% | 1 answer in 2,984 |
| ChatGPT | 68.7% | 0.4% |
The question mark shows the difference in style. Gemini ends on a direct question in 75% of its answers and Google AI Mode in 45.1%. ChatGPT and Perplexity phrase their follow-ups as offers instead, so they almost never end on a question mark: 0.4% of ChatGPT answers and 1 of 2,984 Perplexity answers.
Each engine has a signature closing line
ChatGPT's most common closer is "If you tell me...", used in 2,090 answers, as in "If you tell me which property you're trying to sell, I can give you the exact steps." Perplexity uses "If you want" in 2,002 answers. Gemini most often ends on a plain question with no offer phrase, in 3,447 answers, and otherwise with "Would you like" (1,473).

| AI engine | Most common closing | Answers using it |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | "If you tell me..." | 2,090 |
| Gemini | A direct question | 3,447 |
| Google AI Mode | A direct question | 1,654 |
| Google AI Overviews | "I can help..." | 1,063 |
| Perplexity | "If you want..." | 2,002 |
Google AI Overviews prefer "I can help" (1,063 answers) and "I can give" (664). ChatGPT's conditional style is the most direct request for personal detail: it tells the user exactly what to share and what they will get in return, which makes the next answer tailored to that person.
Money questions get the most follow-ups
The topic changes the rate. Follow-ups are most common in answers about money (87.4%), insurance (87.3%), recipes (86.7%) and taxes (86.6%). These are questions where the right answer depends on the person: their income, their state, their family, their pantry.

Weather (64.7%) and energy (68.2%) answers are the most likely to simply end. A forecast is the same for everyone in a place, so there is less to ask. For businesses in finance and insurance, that means most AI conversations about their topic continue past the first answer, into the territory where specific providers get named.
What this means for marketers and brands
Build content for the second question. The follow-up is where a general question becomes a specific one, so publish situation-specific pages that answer the details AI asks for: by state, by budget, by type of customer, by use case.
Note what AI asks people to share. Google AI Mode asks investors for their investment timeline and risk tolerance; ChatGPT asks a seller which kind of property they mean. If your pages state clearly who you serve, where, and at what price, you are easier to match when the user answers the follow-up.
Then run the conversation yourself: ask the first question, answer the follow-up as a customer would, and see who gets recommended. Working with an ai seo company that tests these multi-step conversations shows where your pages drop out.
