Summary
Ask Gemini how long to roast a chicken and you get a clear, confident answer: the oven temperature, the timing, a tip about resting the meat. What you usually do not get is a link to the recipe site the answer drew on. The answer ends, and there is nothing to click.
For the person asking, that means no easy way to check the claim. For the business or publisher behind the information, it means no visit, no ad view and no chance to win a customer, even when the answer is built on its content. Whether an AI engine shows its sources decides whether AI visibility can bring in any traffic at all.
Gemini is the engine that most often leaves sources out. 61.2% of its answers to everyday questions cite no source, against 2.2% of ChatGPT's answers. Across all five engines, 21% of answers give the reader nothing to click, and in topics like nutrition, energy and business the rate rises to about one in three.
What we measured
On September 23, 2026 we asked 2,984 everyday questions, drawn from real search demand across 31 topics such as taxes, recipes, health and gardening, to five AI engines from a US location: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews (the AI summary shown above Google's search results). ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode answered each question twice, Perplexity once, and AI Overviews appeared on 5,052 of the searches, for 25,940 answers in all.
A cited source is a link to a web page that an AI engine shows with its answer, either inside the text or in a list of sources. An answer counts as having no source when it shows no such link at all. The rate for all engines is the share of all 25,940 answers with no source, so engines with more answers count for more.
Gemini leaves most answers without a source
No other engine comes close. Google AI Mode leaves out sources in 25.8% of its answers, about one in four. ChatGPT (2.2%) and Google AI Overviews (1.6%) cite something on almost every answer, and Perplexity cited at least one source in every one of its 2,984 answers.

The split runs through Google's own products. AI Overviews, which sit on top of Google's search results, nearly always link out, while the Gemini assistant usually answers from what it knows without pointing to a page. The same company's AI can send a publisher traffic in one product and none in another.
One in five AI answers has nothing to click
Across all five engines, 21% of answers cite no source, about one in five. Gemini drives most of that: without it, the rate for the other four engines is 8.8%. Google AI Mode adds the rest, leaving out sources on about one answer in four.
For a business, the engine your customers use matters more than any other factor here. On ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, a cited answer is the norm, and a well-sourced page has a real chance of earning a click. On Gemini, most answers never show a source, so the only way a business appears is by name in the text.
Recipe and business answers go unsourced, tax answers do not
The topic of the question changes the rate sharply. Across all engines, 33.1% of answers about nutrition, 31.8% about energy and 28.9% about business cite no source, against 6.2% about taxes, 9.2% about shopping and 11.7% about travel. On Gemini the spread is extreme: it cites nothing on 93.3% of recipe answers and 91.2% of business answers, but on only 8.8% of tax answers.

Tax and shopping answers carry facts a reader needs to verify or act on: a filing deadline, a price, a product page. AI engines cite for those. Recipes, gardening tips and general business advice read as common knowledge, so the engines answer without attribution, and the recipe sites, garden publishers and advice writers whose work underlies those answers get no link back.
What this means for publishers and businesses
If your traffic depends on informational content in topics like recipes, gardening, nutrition, energy or home improvement, expect about one AI answer in four to one in three in your topic to link to no one, and most Gemini answers. Focus link-earning work on ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, which cite on nearly every answer, and give them pages with specific facts, numbers and steps worth attributing.
Then measure brand mentions, not only links. When an engine shows no source, the only way your business appears is by name, so make sure your name, what you do and where you do it are stated consistently across your site and the sites that write about you. An ai seo company such as Suff Digital tracks both citations and unlinked brand mentions across every major AI engine, so you see the full picture.
