Summary
Someone asks an AI engine for the best running shoes and gets a tidy answer: five brands, a line on what each does well, a suggestion for flat feet. They settle on the third brand. Then, more often than not, they have to open a new tab and search for it, because the answer named the brand without linking to it.
For a brand, that gap separates being recommended by AI from getting a visitor from AI. Analytics that count AI referral traffic see only the linked recommendations. The unlinked ones still shape what people buy, and they send the buyer to a search engine, a marketplace or a competitor's ad before they reach the brand's own site.
Most AI recommendations work that way. 53.7% of AI answers that name a brand link to none of the brands they name. The average answer to a "best" question names 4.9 brands and links 1.2, and Gemini, which names more brands than any other engine, links almost none of them.
What we measured
On September 23, 2026 we asked five AI engines, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews, 2,000 "best" questions such as "best running shoes" or "best CRM for small business", across 20 categories, from a US location. ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode answered each question twice and Perplexity once. For each answer we listed the distinct brands named in the text and checked which of them carried a clickable link.
A brand counts as named when the answer mentions it by name. It counts as linked when its name is itself a clickable link, including the product cards ChatGPT shows and the product links in Google's AI features. Numbered citation markers, such as [1] after a sentence, point to a source page rather than to the brand, so they do not count as brand links.
Most AI recommendations send no one to the brands they name
The average answer to a "best" question names 4.9 brands and links 1.2, one brand in four. For every brand that gets a link, three more are recommended as plain text. A brand can appear in AI answers to every question in its category and still see little of that in its referral traffic.
The unlinked mention still does its work. A reader who has just been told your product is among the best will look for it, usually by searching your brand name on Google or a marketplace. Whether they reach you or a reseller from there depends on how well you own the search results for your own name.
Gemini and Perplexity name brands without linking them
Gemini names more brands than any other engine, 5.6 per answer, and links 0.1 of them, 1.6% of the brands it names. Perplexity names 4.4 brands per answer and links none, because it credits its sources with numbered citation markers instead of linking brand names.

| AI engine | Brands named per answer | Brands linked per answer | Share of named brands linked |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 4.7 | 2 | 42% |
| Google AI Overviews | 4.7 | 2 | 43% |
| Google AI Mode | 4.9 | 1.5 | 31% |
| Gemini | 5.6 | 0.1 | 2% |
| Perplexity | 4.4 | 0 | 0% |
| All engines | 4.9 | 1.2 | 25% |
On these two engines, a recommendation reaches the reader as a name alone. The brand gets the credit but not the click, and the next step belongs to whoever ranks for that name in search.
ChatGPT and Google link the most brands
42% of the brands ChatGPT names carry a link, and 43% of those named by Google AI Overviews, about two in every five and two brands per answer each. Google AI Mode links 31%. These links include shopping features: ChatGPT's product cards and the product links in Google's AI results, which tie a brand name to a product page, a retailer or a price.
These engines give brands a direct path from recommendation to visit, and the path runs through product data. A brand with a complete, accurate product feed and clear product pages has the best chance of getting its name turned into a link.
Streaming questions get the longest shortlists
The number of brands named depends heavily on the category. Answers about streaming name 7.6 brands on average, services 6.8, gaming 6.7, travel 6.6 and electronics 6.5. Answers about health products name 2.7, outdoor gear 3.4 and beauty 3.7.
| Category | Brands named per answer |
|---|---|
| Streaming | 7.6 |
| Services | 6.8 |
| Gaming | 6.7 |
| Travel | 6.6 |
| Electronics | 6.5 |
| Cars | 5.4 |
| Software | 5 |
| Fitness | 4.8 |
| Insurance | 4.7 |
| Phones | 4.5 |
| Kitchen | 4.3 |
| Finance | 4.1 |
| Pets | 4 |
| Home | 3.9 |
| Beauty | 3.7 |
| Outdoor | 3.4 |
| Health | 2.7 |
Most shortlists sit close to five names. The median AI answer to a "best" question names 5 brands, 13.8% of answers name two or fewer and 4.8% name ten or more; the longest named 22, and 4% name no brand at all. The extremes come from engine and category together: Gemini's streaming answers name 8.7 brands on average, while ChatGPT's answers about health products name 1.2. Apple is named in 53.6% of AI answers about streaming, and Nature Made leads health answers at 37.5%.
A long list spreads attention thin: being one of seven streaming services named is worth less than being one of three health products. In short-list categories like health, beauty and outdoor gear, the brands AI names get a much larger share of the reader's attention, and missing from the list costs more.
What this means for brands
Track mentions, not only clicks. If your analytics count only AI referral traffic, you are missing most of the times AI recommends you, especially on Gemini and Perplexity. Ask the "best" questions in your category across all five engines each month and record whether you are named, where you appear in the list and whether you are linked.
Then make the follow-up search easy. Own the search results for your brand name, keep product names identical across your site and every retailer, and keep your Google Business Profile and shopping listings complete. ChatGPT and Google turn brand names into links through product cards and product results, so clean, current product data gives you the best chance of a click. Suff Digital, an ai seo company, measures AI brand mentions alongside AI referral traffic so neither goes uncounted.
