Summary
Read a ChatGPT answer and the sources sit right in the sentences: a claim, then a link to the page it came from. Read the same answer in Google AI Mode and the sentences are clean; the sources are stacked in a list to the side, where a reader has to go looking for them.
That placement changes how likely a citation is to be clicked. A link inside the sentence that uses your information is in front of the reader at the moment they care about it. A link in a side list is easy to miss. Two citations that count the same in a report can deliver very different traffic.
The engines split sharply. Google AI Mode links only 7.8% of its cited sources inside the answer text, and Google AI Overviews 13.8%. ChatGPT links 100% of its sources in the text, Gemini 94.6%, and Perplexity sits in the middle at 45.7%.
What we measured
On September 23, 2026 we asked 2,984 everyday questions to five AI engines from a US location: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews. We collected both the answer text and the full list of sources for every answer, 155,312 citations in all, and checked where each source was shown.
A citation is inline when it is linked inside the answer text, either as a text link or through a numbered marker such as [3] that points to it. Otherwise it appears only in the separate source list shown beside or below the answer. Each engine's inline share is the percentage of all its citations that were linked in the text.
Google puts most sources beside the answer, not in it
Google AI Overviews follow the same pattern, with 13.8% of cited sources linked in the text. Both show a written answer and a separate list of sources, and most sources live only in that list. For a website cited by Google's AI, the most likely placement is a card in the side list, not a link in the sentence that used its content.

A citation in Google's side list still builds credibility: the brand and page title are visible to anyone who looks. But it asks the reader to leave the answer and scan a list, and fewer readers do that than click a link sitting in the sentence they are reading.
ChatGPT and Gemini put their sources in the sentence
ChatGPT links 100% of its cited sources inside the answer text, and Gemini 94.6%. Both weave the link into the sentence that uses the information, so the source appears exactly where the reader meets the claim. A ChatGPT citation is always in the text; there is no side list where it can be overlooked.
That makes each citation on these engines more prominent. ChatGPT cites fewer sources than Google's AI features, but every one of them sits in the answer itself, which is the placement most likely to earn a click.
Perplexity sits in the middle
Perplexity links 45.7% of its cited sources in the answer text, using numbered markers after its sentences. The rest appear only in its long source list. Because Perplexity cites so many sources, that still leaves it with more inline citations than any other engine in total, but a Perplexity citation is roughly a coin flip between the text and the list.
More sources does not mean more visible sources
Perplexity and Google cite far more sources than ChatGPT, but most of the extra sources never appear in the text. Google AI Mode cites about 32,100 sources that appear only in its side list, more than 11 times the 2,700 it links inline. Google AI Overviews show about 32,500 sources in the side list alone against 5,200 in the text. ChatGPT links all 20,275 of its citations inline.

| AI engine | Total citations | Linked in the text (about) | Source list only (about) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Perplexity | 54,842 | 25,100 | 29,800 |
| Google AI Overviews | 37,669 | 5,200 | 32,500 |
| Google AI Mode | 34,810 | 2,700 | 32,100 |
| ChatGPT | 20,275 | 20,275 | 0 |
| Gemini | 7,716 | 7,300 | 400 |
Counted by inline links rather than total citations, the ranking changes. Perplexity and ChatGPT deliver the most in-text citations, and Google AI Mode, despite citing nearly 35,000 sources, delivers the fewest of any engine, fewer even than Gemini's 7,300.
What this means for marketers
Count where you are cited, not only whether you are cited. An inline citation in ChatGPT or Gemini is prime placement. A citation in Google's source list still helps with credibility and brand exposure, but expect fewer clicks from it, and weigh your AI visibility reports accordingly.
To win the inline spot, give AI engines a sentence worth attributing: a specific number, a clear definition or a concrete recommendation that the engine can quote and link. Pages full of general advice give an engine nothing specific to attribute. Working with an ai seo company that reports citation placement, not just citation counts, shows which of your citations can actually send traffic.
