Summary
A dog owner asks an AI assistant whether grapes are dangerous for dogs, or how often a puppy needs vaccines. On ChatGPT, the sources are a veterinary hospital network, a breed registry and a veterinary publisher. On Gemini, it is usually no source at all, and when there is one, most often Wikipedia.
Vets, pet brands and pet publishers compete for citations alongside those sources. A citation is the link an AI answer shows as its evidence, and it is one of the few ways an answer sends a reader to a website. Pet questions have clear expert winners, which shows exactly the kind of page AI engines trust on the subject.
ChatGPT cites vcahospitals.com in 23.6% of its sourced pet answers and the American Kennel Club in 23%; Gemini cites VCA in none and AKC in 1%. Across both engines, three expert sources lead almost level: VCA (18.4%), AKC (18.2%) and PetMD (16.1%).
What we measured
On September 23, 2026 we asked ChatGPT and Gemini 172 pet questions, each twice, as part of a wider study of AI sources across 12 industries. That gave 688 answers, 435 of which cited at least one source, and 324 different websites were cited across them.
A website's share is the percentage of sourced answers that cite it at least once, counting all pages from the same site together. We also sorted every citation by the kind of website behind it: government and education (.gov, .edu and .mil addresses), nonprofits and associations (.org), media and reference publishers, user-generated sites such as forums, social media and video platforms, and companies and other commercial websites. The same measures were taken for the other 11 industries.
Three pet experts lead the source list
The top three are each cited in about one sourced answer in six: VCA Animal Hospitals, a national network of veterinary hospitals with a large library of pet health articles; the American Kennel Club, the breed registry; and PetMD, a veterinary-reviewed publisher. Wikipedia (13.1%), Cornell University's veterinary college (9%) and the ASPCA (8.7%) follow, then the Merck Veterinary Manual (5.1%) and the NIH (4.6%).

What the leaders share is veterinary authority written for owners: clear articles on symptoms, toxic foods, vaccines and breed traits, reviewed by vets. Retailers sit lower; Chewy ranks 17th at 2.1%. The list is also compact: 324 websites were cited across all pet answers, the fewest of the 12 industries.
ChatGPT and Gemini cite different sites
ChatGPT relies on expert institutions: VCA (23.6%), AKC (23%), PetMD (15.6%), the ASPCA (11.2%) and Cornell (10.9%). Gemini cites VCA and the ASPCA in none of its sourced answers and AKC in 1%, and turns to reference and community sites: Wikipedia (28.1%), PetMD (17.7%), Reddit and A-Z Animals (14.6% each) and YouTube (13.5%). PetMD is the one expert source both engines use heavily.

Gemini also cites far less often. ChatGPT cites a source in 98.5% of pet answers and lists 2.3 websites on average; Gemini cites a source in 27.9%, so nearly three in four of its pet answers name no website. Across both engines, 36.8% of pet answers cite nothing, almost all of them from Gemini.
How pets compare with other industries
Companies and other commercial websites take 50.5% of pet citations and nonprofits and associations (.org) 26.6%, a large share that reflects the AKC, the ASPCA and other pet charities and societies. Government and university websites take 10.1%, 10th of 12 industries, and user-generated content, meaning forums, social media and video, takes 3.1%.

In health and fitness, a government agency is the top source. In pets, a veterinary hospital network earns the top spot by publishing the owner-facing content that agencies do not, which shows that a business can lead an industry's AI citations when it writes the reference material itself.
What this means for vets and pet brands
VCA's lead is the model for a local veterinary practice or pet brand. Publish clear, vet-reviewed answers to the questions owners ask: which foods are toxic, when vaccines are due, what a symptom might mean and when to call a vet, how breeds differ. Name the reviewing veterinarian, date each page and keep one question per page so an AI engine can quote it cleanly.
Then look at Gemini separately. It cites no source in most pet answers and, when it does, leans on Wikipedia, Reddit and YouTube, so owner discussions and video matter there. Working with an ai seo company that tracks pet citations across engines shows which questions your pages already win and which go to the national sources.
