    Summary

Someone asks an AI assistant how to free up storage on a Mac, or whether a laptop can run Windows 11. The source under the answer is very often the company that makes the product: Apple's support pages, Microsoft's documentation, OpenAI's help center, IBM's explainers. Reviews and tech blogs appear, but further down the list.

For software companies, that is the lesson. A citation is the link an AI answer shows as its evidence, and it is one of the few ways an answer sends a reader to a website. On software questions, AI engines trust the vendor's own help content first, which means a company's documentation is the page most likely to be cited.

apple.com appears in 24.3% of sourced answers and microsoft.com in 17.7%, together far ahead of the next source, Wikipedia at 10.5%. Companies and other commercial websites take 75.3% of software citations, and government and university websites 4.7%, the lowest of 12 industries.

    What we measured

On September 23, 2026 we asked ChatGPT and Gemini 400 software questions, each twice, as part of a wider study of AI sources across 12 industries. That gave 1,600 answers, 1,281 of which cited at least one source, and 718 different websites were cited across them.

A website's share is the percentage of sourced answers that cite it at least once, counting all pages from the same site together. We also sorted every citation by the kind of website behind it: government and education (.gov, .edu and .mil addresses), nonprofits and associations (.org), media and reference publishers, user-generated sites such as forums, social media and video platforms, and companies and other commercial websites. The same measures were taken for the other 11 industries.

Apple and Microsoft dominate software answers

    24.3%
of sourced AI answers to software questions cite apple.com.

Apple and Microsoft are the only websites cited in more than one sourced answer in nine. After them come Wikipedia (10.5%), OpenAI (5.5%), IBM (4.9%), Google (4.5%) and Reddit (4.2%), and then hardware makers HP (3.4%) and Lenovo (2.7%). The pattern is consistent: the company that makes the product or runs the platform is the source.

Software is where a company's own content matters most. In fitness or home improvement, a business is cited alongside government research; in software, mostly alongside other companies' help pages, and the vendor with the clearest documentation for its own product is the natural source.

What this means for software companies

Treat your help center and documentation as your most important AI pages. Apple and Microsoft win these answers with public support articles that answer one question per page, with exact steps, version numbers and settings names. Do the same for your product: make help content public and crawlable rather than locked behind a login, give each article a question-style title, and keep it current with every release.

Then cover the questions buyers ask before they are customers: comparisons, pricing, integrations, system requirements. On Gemini, where Wikipedia and Reddit are cited heavily, make sure the public record about your product is accurate. A saas seo agency can map which of your help and product pages AI engines already cite and where the gaps are.
