Federal student aid sites and lenders fill most of the top ten, and the answers draw on 998 different websites, more than any other industry.

Summary
A parent asks an AI assistant how to compare two financial aid offers, or whether a private student loan is worth it. The sources under the answer are the CFPB, Federal Student Aid and the Department of Education, and on Gemini, rate sites and lenders such as Bankrate, Experian and SoFi. No college's own website makes the top 15.
For colleges, universities and education brands, that is a gap worth noticing. A citation is the link an AI answer shows as its evidence, and it is one of the few ways an answer sends a reader to a website. Five of the six most-cited sources are about paying for college, so the sites that answer the money questions win the citations.
consumerfinance.gov leads at 13.1% of sourced answers, followed by studentaid.gov at 11.8% and ed.gov at 6.9%. The field is wide open below them: 998 different websites were cited, the most of any industry, and no source reaches one sourced answer in seven.
What we measured
On September 23, 2026 we asked ChatGPT and Gemini 400 college questions, each twice, as part of a wider study of AI sources across 12 industries. That gave 1,600 answers, 1,195 of which cited at least one source, and 998 different websites were cited across them.
A website's share is the percentage of sourced answers that cite it at least once, counting all pages from the same site together. We also sorted every citation by the kind of website behind it: government and education (.gov, .edu and .mil addresses), nonprofits and associations (.org), media and reference publishers, user-generated sites such as forums, social media and video platforms, and companies and other commercial websites. The same measures were taken for the other 11 industries.
Paying for college dominates the source list
Five of the top six sources are about paying for college: the CFPB, Federal Student Aid (11.8%), the Department of Education (6.9%), the credit bureau Experian (6.1%) and the rate site Bankrate (6.1%). The College Board, which runs the SAT and the CSS Profile aid form, is the top education organization at 5.8%. Lenders SoFi (3.6%) and Credible (2.6%) also make the top 15.

The same agency tops real estate questions, and for a similar reason: both subjects turn on loans, credit and repayment, where the CFPB publishes plain-language guidance. The State Department (3.7%) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2.5%) round out the government sources, answering questions about student visas and the job prospects a degree leads to.
ChatGPT and Gemini cite different sites
ChatGPT sticks to official sources: the CFPB (17.3%), Federal Student Aid (15%), the Department of Education (9.7%) and the College Board (7.6%). Gemini leans on commercial finance sites and forums: Bankrate (14.6%), Experian and Reddit (11.6% each) and SoFi (10.1%), all of which ChatGPT cites in under 4% of its answers.

ChatGPT cites a source in 98.9% of college answers and lists 2.4 websites on average. Gemini cites a source in 50.5% and lists 3.6. Across both engines, 25.3% of college answers cite nothing, almost all of them from Gemini. A family asking the same question on two engines can be sent to the Department of Education on one and to a private lender on the other.
College answers draw on the widest range of sources
AI engines cited 998 different websites in answers to college questions, the most of the 12 industries. Government and university websites take 32.1% of college citations, 4th of 12 industries, and companies and other commercial websites 44.9%. User-generated content, meaning forums, social media and video, takes 2.1%.

A long tail of nearly a thousand sites, with no leader above 13.1%, means college questions have no fixed set of winners. A university or education brand that answers a specific question clearly, such as what a program costs after aid or how a transfer credit works, can become the cited source for it.
What this means for colleges and education brands
Answer the money questions on your own site. Publish net price after typical aid, what the aid package includes, how to appeal an offer, payment plans and loan options, in plain language with real figures and dates. Link to studentaid.gov and the CFPB for the federal rules, and add what only you know: your costs, your deadlines, your outcomes.
Then check both engines for the questions your applicants ask. ChatGPT sends them to federal sources; Gemini, when it cites anything, sends them to lenders, rate sites and Reddit. Working with an ai seo company that tracks those citations shows which of your pages AI engines already use and which questions are going to someone else.
