    Summary

Someone deciding whether to open a Roth IRA or how to pay a tax bill asks an AI assistant. On ChatGPT, the answer almost always lists its sources, most often the IRS, the SEC or the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. On Gemini, a third of the time it lists none, and the reader cannot see where the advice came from.

Banks, lenders, tax firms and personal finance publishers compete for citations alongside those regulators. A citation is the link an AI answer shows as its evidence, and it is one of the few ways an answer sends a reader to a website. Knowing which sites win citations, and which engine cites at all, shows a financial brand where it can realistically appear.

Gemini cites no source in 35.4% of money answers, against 3.9% for ChatGPT. When answers do cite, irs.gov leads at 13.8%, and the two engines split below it: ChatGPT leans on regulators, Gemini on companies such as Intuit, SmartAsset and H&R Block.

    What we measured

On September 23, 2026 we asked ChatGPT and Gemini 400 money questions, each twice, as part of a wider study of AI sources across 12 industries. That gave 1,600 answers, 1,286 of which cited at least one source, and 720 different websites were cited across them.

A website's share is the percentage of sourced answers that cite it at least once, counting all pages from the same site together. We also sorted every citation by the kind of website behind it: government and education (.gov, .edu and .mil addresses), nonprofits and associations (.org), media and reference publishers, user-generated sites such as forums, social media and video platforms, and companies and other commercial websites. The same measures were taken for the other 11 industries.

The IRS tops the money source list

    13.8%
of sourced AI answers to money questions cite irs.gov.

The top three are all federal agencies: the IRS, the SEC's investor education site investor.gov (7.3%) and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (6.6%). On questions about taxes, investing rules and consumer rights, AI engines go to the body that writes the rules before anyone who explains them.

Financial companies earn citations too. American Express, Capital One, Chase, Experian and Fidelity all rank in the top 25, which shows that a bank's own explainer pages can stand next to the regulators. Bankrate appears in 2.6% of sourced answers and The Motley Fool in 3.4%. No single website reaches one answer in seven, so the field is open below the top three.

ChatGPT's next choices are investor.gov (11.3%) and the CFPB (10.5%), which Gemini barely cites. Gemini's next choice is Intuit, the maker of TurboTax, at 11.8%, followed by SmartAsset (8.7%) and H&R Block (6.6%). ChatGPT never cites Intuit and cites SmartAsset in 0.1% of its answers. A financial company can be a regular source on Gemini and invisible on ChatGPT.

Money sits in the middle on both measures. Its top source reaches 13.8% of sourced answers, far below the 41.5% for nih.gov in fitness or 37.5% for usda.gov in recipes. No one website owns money answers, which leaves room for a bank, lender or adviser to become the cited source on specific questions.

What this means for financial brands

Leave the statement of the tax rules to the IRS. Answer the questions the regulators leave open: what a rule means for a specific customer, what a product costs, how to compare two options, what to do next. Cite and link the official source on the page, then add the worked example, the fee table and the plain-language steps that the agency page does not give.

Check both engines. ChatGPT sends citations to regulators and to banks' own education pages; Gemini sends them to companies and calculators, and gives no source in more than a third of money answers, so being named in the text matters there as much as being linked. Our financial services seo work builds the specific, well-sourced pages that AI answers draw on.
