    Summary

A shopper types "yoga mat" into Amazon. The first row looks like ordinary results, but look closer and some of those products carry a small "Sponsored" label. Their sellers paid to be there. On most searches, at least one of the first ten products has bought its place.

For a seller, that changes what "ranking on Amazon" means. A product can earn its organic position through sales and reviews and still sit below, or between, paid listings from competitors. Knowing how many ads appear, and where, tells a seller how much of the top of the page is really up for grabs organically.

Ads are the norm. 73.7% of Amazon searches show at least one sponsored product in the first 10 results, and the average search shows 1.5. The ads cluster near the top: the fourth spot is an ad on 54% of searches. Sponsored products also tend to be less established, with a median of 207 ratings against 650 for the organic products around them.

    What we measured

This study covers Amazon.com (US) first-page results for 4,996 product searches on September 23, 2026, from a licensed marketplace data provider. For every product on the first results page we recorded its position, its price, its rating and number of ratings, and whether Amazon marked it as sponsored.

A sponsored product is a listing that Amazon marks as "Sponsored": a paid ad placed among the search results. An organic product is one that appears without payment, based on Amazon's own ranking. We counted sponsored products among the first 10 product positions on each search, the spots a shopper sees first, and averaged across all 4,996 searches.

The number of ads per search is lumpy. 26.3% of searches show no sponsored product in the first 10, and 42.3% show exactly one. Then there is a second cluster: 16.6% of searches show exactly four. Searches with five or more ads in the first 10 are rare, at 2.7%.

Across all positions on the results page, sponsored products make up 11.8% of listings. In the first 10 they average 1.5, so the ads are concentrated where shoppers look first.

Ads cluster in the first four spots

Where the ads appear matters as much as how many. The first spot is a sponsored product on 27.2% of searches, the second on 32.2%, the third on 20.9% and the fourth on 54%. From the fifth spot to the tenth, the ad rate stays at 5% or below.

Positions five to ten are almost entirely organic. A product that ranks organically in that band usually has no ads between it and the products below it, but it often has one or more paid listings above it. For a seller, the top four spots are partly for sale, and the fourth is sold more often than not.

Health and home carry the most ads

Health searches average 2.4 sponsored products in the first 10, the highest of any category, and home and beauty searches 1.8. Electronics has the fewest at 1.1, followed by gaming at 1.2.

The gap is large: a health search shows more than twice as many ads in the first 10 as an electronics search. A seller in health, home or beauty should expect more paid competition at the top of the page than one in electronics or gaming, and should budget for it.

What this means for Amazon sellers

Plan for ads as part of visibility, not an extra. On three in four searches the first 10 spots include at least one sponsored product, and the fourth spot is an ad more often than not. If your product is new, expect to compete with paid listings placed above you, and budget to be one of them on your most important searches.

Use ads to build a history, not only to buy clicks. Sponsored products have about a third of the ratings of the organic products around them, which suggests ads are how newer products break in. Pair every campaign with a plan to earn reviews, so the product can hold an organic position when the ad spend stops.

Budget by category. In health, home and beauty you will face more ads in the first 10 than in electronics or gaming. An amazon ppc agency can set bids by category and search so your budget goes where the paid spots decide the sale.
