    Summary

A dealership's marketing manager sets a Google Ads budget for the month. "used cars", searched 673,000 times a month, costs $2.57 a click. "buy a car" costs $8.24. Across hundreds of car-buying searches, the manager never sees a price above $9.

Cost per click, or CPC, is what an advertiser pays each time someone clicks its ad in Google's search results, whether or not that person visits the lot. It decides how many shoppers a monthly budget can bring to a dealership's website. For car dealers, the surprise is how little those clicks cost compared with almost every other industry.

No auto dealer Google Ads keyword costs $10 or more per click. The most expensive, "carvana sell car", costs $8.76, and the average auto dealer click costs $1.68, 84% less than the $10.82 average across 18,477 keywords in 23 industries. The auction is still crowded: 78% of auto dealer keywords draw heavy competition, so the challenge is standing out, not affording the click.

    What we measured

In September 2026 we analysed Google Ads Keyword Planner prices for 466 auto dealer keywords with a cost per click above zero, each searched at least 2,900 times a month in the US. For those keywords we calculated the average, median and spread of cost per click, and compared auto dealers with 18,477 keywords across 23 industries. We also collected state-level prices for the 25 largest US states, and Microsoft Ads prices for the 362 keywords priced on both platforms.

Cost per click is Google's estimate of the average price an advertiser pays for one click on an ad shown for that search. Competition is Google's rating of how many advertisers bid on a keyword, from low to high. The median is the middle keyword: half cost less, half cost more. The volume-weighted average counts each keyword by how often it is searched. Each state is compared with the national price of the keywords priced in that state, so a state's percentage shows how much more or less a local dealer pays for identical searches.

Cheap clicks in a crowded auction

Low prices do not mean few bidders. 78% of auto dealer keywords are rated high competition, meaning many advertisers want to appear for them. Yet none of them pays much for a single visit, so the contest is decided by ad quality and relevance more than by budget.

Weighted by how often each keyword is searched, the average rises to $1.95, as the busiest searches cost a little more than the typical one. "used cars", the biggest keyword at 673,000 searches a month, costs $2.57. Keywords containing "near me" average $2.09 against $1.66 for other auto dealer keywords, 26% more, because a shopper searching nearby is closer to visiting a lot.

Demand follows the car-buying calendar. Auto dealer searches peaked in March 2026 and were lowest in November 2025, with 1.44 times as many searches in the peak month as in the quietest.

Arizona pays 27% more than the national price

Among the 25 largest states, Arizona is the most expensive for auto dealer clicks, 27% above the national price of the same keywords, followed by Florida (25% above) and North Carolina (14% above). Wisconsin is the cheapest at 17% below, with Minnesota at 13% below and Illinois at 12% below.

    State vs national price
    Arizona +27%
    Florida +25%
    North Carolina +14%
    Illinois -12%
    Minnesota -13%
    Wisconsin -17%

In dollars the gap is small, since the typical click costs under $2, but for a dealer buying thousands of clicks a month, a 27% premium adds up.

Microsoft Ads charges about 31% less for the same searches

For the 362 auto dealer keywords priced on both platforms, a click on Microsoft Ads, which shows ads on Bing search, costs $1.27 on average against $1.83 on Google Ads, about 31% less. The same campaign reaches car shoppers on Bing for less per visit.

What this means for car dealerships

When every competitor can afford the click, relevance wins it. Inventory ads that show the exact make, model, price and location a shopper searched for give them a reason to pick your listing over the marketplace next to it. Send each click to the matching vehicle page, not the homepage.

Generic sell-my-car searches are among the priciest in the category. If you buy used cars, give those generic keywords their own campaign and a landing page with an instant offer form. Bid up on "near me" searches around your lot, plan for the March peak, and expect to pay more in Arizona and Florida.

A google ads agency that builds campaigns from your live inventory turns cheap clicks into showroom visits.
