Summary
It is 9 p.m. in July, the air conditioning has died and the house is getting hotter. The homeowner searches "24 hour ac repair" and calls the first company that answers. Every HVAC contractor wants that call, and on Google Ads the click costs $79.41. A few hours earlier, a click from someone shopping for a portable air conditioner cost advertisers a small fraction of that.
Cost per click, or CPC, is what an advertiser pays each time someone clicks its ad, whether or not that person books a job. It decides how many service calls a monthly budget can bring in. In HVAC, the gap between urgent repair searches and everything else is so wide that the average price says little about what a contractor will actually pay.
On average, HVAC clicks are cheap: $7.64, 29% below the $10.82 average across 18,477 keywords in 23 industries, with a median of just $3.08. But the emergency and repair searches that bring in paying jobs cost $39 to $84 a click, and demand nearly triples between November and July.
What we measured
In September 2026 we collected Google Ads Keyword Planner prices for HVAC keywords, each searched at least 2,900 times a month in the US, and analyzed the 575 HVAC keywords with a price above zero. For those we calculated the average, median and spread of cost per click and compared them with 18,477 keywords across 23 industries. We also collected state-level prices for the 25 largest states and Microsoft Ads prices for the 407 keywords priced on both platforms.
Cost per click is Google's estimate of the average price an advertiser pays for one click on an ad shown for that search. The median is the middle keyword: half cost less, half cost more. The volume-weighted average counts each keyword by how often it is searched. Each state is compared with the national price of the same keywords, so its percentage shows how much more or less a local contractor pays for identical searches.
Emergency repair searches cost the most
Emergency searches fill the top three: "hvac emergency service" at $83.57, "emergency hvac repair" at $81.38 and "24 hour ac repair" at $79.41, each more than ten times the HVAC average. Repair and maintenance searches follow: "hvac repair companies" at $65.74, "air conditioner tune up" at $53.10 and "ac repair service", searched 33,100 times a month, at $51.30. The most expensive 10% of HVAC keywords cost $20.35 or more.

Someone with a broken system needs help now and will book whoever answers, so a single emergency click can turn into a repair job or a replacement system worth far more than the click. Contractors bid accordingly, and the searches with "emergency" or "24 hour" in them are where HVAC auctions are most crowded.
Most HVAC clicks are cheap
The typical HVAC keyword costs $3.08, and the middle half cost between $0.91 and $9.18 a click. The most common price band is under $1, holding 166 keywords, 29% of the total. 24% of HVAC keywords cost $10 or more.

| CPC range | Keywords | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Under $1 | 166 | 29% |
| $1 to $2 | 87 | 15% |
| $2 to $5 | 93 | 16% |
| $5 to $10 | 93 | 16% |
| $10 to $20 | 77 | 13% |
| $20 to $50 | 52 | 9% |
| $50 to $100 | 7 | 1.2% |
The cheap majority is made up of product and research searches, such as "portable air conditioner", from people buying equipment or reading up rather than calling a contractor. Weighted by how often each keyword is searched, the average is $7.95, and "hvac" itself, the biggest keyword at 450,000 searches a month, costs $19.99.
What this means for HVAC contractors
Put most of the budget on repair and emergency terms, and keep product research searches out with negative keywords. Those emergency clicks are the most expensive in the trade, so make sure every call from them is answered live, day and night, or the money is wasted.
Plan for the season and the market. Raise budgets ahead of the summer peak, when demand is 2.8 times the autumn low, and set bids by state: an Arizona click costs far more than one in New York for the same search. Then copy your best campaigns to Microsoft Ads, where the same searches cost about a third as much. As an hvac ppc agency, Suff Digital adjusts HVAC budgets by season and market every month.
