80% of auto repair shop websites offer no way to book online, even for routine jobs like oil changes and inspections. The phone is the default instead: 71% of shop websites have a tap-to-call link.

Analysis of 334 US auto repair shop websites · auto repair shop websites listed on Google Business Profiles, September 2026

    Key Findings

    1. 1.80% of auto repair shop websites offer no way to book a service online; 19.9% let customers book through a scheduling tool or a Book Now button.
    2. 2.71% of auto repair shop websites have a tap-to-call link, a phone number that dials when tapped on a mobile phone, more than three times the share that take bookings online.
    3. 3.54.5% of auto repair shop websites offer tap-to-call but no online booking, so for most shops a phone call is the only quick way to get a car booked in.
    4. 4.27% of auto repair shop websites built on WordPress offer online booking, against 15.8% of shop websites on other or unidentified platforms.
    5. 5.18.3% of auto repair shop websites offer none of the four direct routes to the shop: online booking, tap-to-call, a contact form or live chat.

    Summary

A driver notices the oil change sticker is two months overdue. It is 9 pm, the shop is closed, and they want to pick a slot for Saturday morning. On most auto repair shop websites they cannot: there is a phone number and opening hours, but no way to choose a time.

Oil changes, tire rotations, inspections and brake checks are short, predictable jobs, exactly the kind of work customers are happy to schedule themselves. A shop that lets them book online fills its bays with customers who have already committed to a time, while a shop that only takes calls loses the ones who search after hours and move on.

80% of auto repair shop websites offer no way to book online. The phone is where shops send customers instead: 71% have a tap-to-call link, and 54.5% offer tap-to-call with no booking option at all.

    What we measured

In September 2026 we checked the websites of 334 US auto repair shops listed on Google Business Profiles, looking at each homepage and up to two linked pages. On every site we recorded whether a visitor could book online, call with one tap, fill in a contact form or start a live chat, whether the site showed reviews or testimonials, and which platform it was built on. We measured online booking on the 327 sites not built on Squarespace.

A site offers online booking when it uses a scheduling tool or shows a Book Now, Book Online, Schedule Online or Request an Appointment button or link. A tap-to-call link is a phone number coded so that tapping it on a phone starts the call. A contact form counts when it has three or more fields to fill in, which leaves out search bars and newsletter boxes.

Four in five auto repair websites take no bookings online

    19.9%
of auto repair shop websites let customers book a service online.

The other 80% ask customers to call, send a form or turn up. That fits how many shops have always worked, with a service writer on the phone quoting and scheduling, but it does not fit how customers now look for a shop: on a phone, often outside working hours, comparing two or three options at once. The shop that shows an open Saturday slot wins that comparison before the others have a chance to answer the phone.

Booking does not have to cover every job. Diagnostic work and major repairs still need a conversation, but routine maintenance has a fixed price and a known duration, which is what a booking tool handles well.

Auto repair shops send customers to the phone

71% of auto repair shop websites have a tap-to-call link, more than three times the share that take bookings online, and the highest share of any contact route on shop websites. 54.5% offer tap-to-call and no booking, so for most shops the phone is the only fast way in.

Contact forms are the second most common route: 44.6% of shop websites have one with three or more fields, which lets a customer ask for a quote or an appointment but still leaves them waiting for a reply. 43.1% show reviews or testimonials, and 9% run a live chat widget.

At the bottom, 18.3% of auto repair shop websites offer none of the four direct routes: no booking, no tap-to-call link, no contact form and no chat. A driver on one of those sites has to copy the phone number or look for another shop.

Shops on WordPress offer booking more often

Platform makes a difference. 27% of auto repair shop websites built on WordPress offer online booking, against 15.8% of shop websites on other or unidentified platforms, about 1.7 times the rate. WordPress sites can add a scheduling plugin or a booking link from the shop's management software in a few steps, which makes booking easier to switch on.

What this means for auto repair shops

Start with routine services. Offer online booking for oil changes, tire rotations, inspections and brake checks, with fixed time slots, and link a Book Service button from the header of every page to the scheduler in your shop management software. Keep diagnostics and larger repairs on a request form that a service writer answers the same day.

Keep the phone easy too. Make the number tappable on every page, and place it next to the booking button so customers who want to talk first can call. Show recent reviews near both, since a driver choosing a new shop wants proof that others trusted it.

Then measure what happens: how many bookings come through the website, at what hours, and for which services. A cro consultant can test button placement and booking steps so more of your website visitors end up with a confirmed slot.
