    Summary

A parent shopping for a tablet asks ChatGPT for the best one and gets an Apple iPad Air M4. She adds "on a budget" and the top recommendation becomes a Samsung Galaxy Tab A9. Three words turned the answer into a different product from a different brand, with a price attached.

That is the most useful thing a shopper can tell an AI assistant, and the most consequential for brands. The first product in the answer is the one most buyers look at, and budget shoppers are a large share of every category. A brand that leads "best X" can be absent from "best X on a budget", which is a separate list built from separate sources.

Budget wording changes ChatGPT's top pick 87.4% of the time, almost nine times in ten. Of six ways of rewording a question, it is the strongest: ahead of a detailed version at 76.8% and adding the year at 65.4%, and far ahead of a typo, "please" or "top", which barely move the pick at all.

    What we measured

On September 23, 2026 we asked ChatGPT, with web search switched on and from a US location, 500 "best product" questions, from TVs and tablets to gaming laptops. Each was asked in its plain form ("What is the best X?"), with "on a budget" added, and in five other reworded versions: a detailed version, one adding "2026", one ending in "please", one using "top" instead of "best", and one with a typo. Every version was asked twice, giving 6,992 answers.

The top pick is the first product ChatGPT recommends. For each plain and reworded pair we compared the top pick and the websites ChatGPT cites as sources. ChatGPT does not repeat itself exactly, so we also compared the plain question with itself across the two rounds; that baseline, 54.6%, is how often the top pick changes by chance. A price counts as quoted when the answer contains a dollar figure.

Budget beats every other wording change

    87.4%
of ChatGPT answers to budget product questions lead with a different product than the plain question.

Budget rewrites the answer more than any other change. A detailed version that lists the buyer's priorities changes the pick 76.8% of the time and adding "2026" 65.4%. A typo, "top" instead of "best" and "please" all stay within about 4 points of the 54.6% baseline, so ChatGPT effectively ignores them.

    Adds "please" 56.5% 84.4%

The sources turn over almost completely as well. 95.9% of budget answers cite a different set of websites from the plain answer, and on average 78% of the cited websites are replaced. ChatGPT is not reranking the same shortlist; it goes looking for budget roundups and price-led guides and builds a new answer from them.

Budget answers name prices and cheaper models

    94.1%
of ChatGPT answers to budget product questions quote a dollar price.

That compares with 65.3% of answers to the plain question, so a budget shopper almost always gets numbers. The picks move down the price range. For TVs, the plain answer led with the Samsung S95H OLED 65 and the budget answer with the TCL 55 QM6K. For tablets, the Apple iPad Air M4 gave way to the Samsung Galaxy Tab A9. For gaming laptops, the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i gave way to the Lenovo LOQ 15, the same brand's entry line.

The source mix shifts toward money and shopping advice. NerdWallet becomes the most-cited website at 9.7% of budget answers, and NBC News (5.7%), Babylist (3.3%) and HubSpot (3.2%) enter the ten most-cited websites, while Wired and TechRadar drop out of it. Budget buyers are steered by different publishers than buyers asking for the best overall.

What this means for value brands and retailers

If your product competes on price, target the budget question directly. Publish clear price points on your product pages, name the budget use case in plain words, and work to be included in the budget roundups on the websites ChatGPT cites for those questions, such as NerdWallet and the shopping sections of news publishers. The budget list is a separate race from the "best overall" list, and it is decided almost from scratch.

Premium brands should check whether they have an entry model that belongs on the budget list, as Lenovo does with the LOQ line, and make sure its price and positioning are easy for AI answers to find. Then ask ChatGPT your category's question with and without "on a budget", several times, and note who leads each. An ai seo company can track which products lead each version over time.
