Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the same "what is the best..." question and all three name the same brand first on 25.5% of questions. Three times in four, at least one AI assistant puts a different brand at the top, and no two assistants agree even half the time.
Analysis of 1,815 "best" questions answered by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity · AI assistant answers, September 2026

Summary
A shopper wants the best car insurance and asks ChatGPT. A colleague asks Gemini, and a friend asks Perplexity. Each gets a confident answer, and each answer opens with a different company. None of them is wrong by the assistant's own standards; they just do not agree.
For a brand, the first name an AI assistant gives to a "best" question is the most valuable spot in the answer. If the three main assistants rarely agree on it, winning one of them tells you little about the others, and a brand that checks only ChatGPT has no idea how it looks to Gemini or Perplexity users.
All three assistants name the same first brand on 25.5% of questions. The closest pair, ChatGPT and Perplexity, agree on 42.8%, and even the same assistant asked twice often changes its answer: Gemini repeats its first pick 47.6% of the time.
What we measured
On September 23, 2026 we asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity 2,000 questions of the form "What is the best [product or service]?" across 20 categories, from phones and mattresses to insurance and software. We took the first brand each assistant named as its top pick, and compared top picks on the 1,815 questions where all three assistants named a brand.
Agreement means two or more assistants named the same brand first for the same question. We also asked ChatGPT and Gemini every question a second time and compared each assistant's two answers, to see how often it repeats its own top pick.
Full agreement happens one time in four
Comparing two assistants at a time raises the rate, but not much. ChatGPT and Perplexity agree on the first brand 42.8% of the time, Gemini and Perplexity 41.8%, and ChatGPT and Gemini 39.5%. Every pair disagrees more often than it agrees.

Each assistant searches the web differently, weighs different sources and writes its answer in its own way. For "best" questions, where many brands have a reasonable claim, those differences are enough to change which brand comes first. A brand's position in AI answers is really three positions, one per assistant.
The assistants do not agree with themselves either
Asked the same question twice, ChatGPT named the same first brand in both answers 63.1% of the time. Gemini did so 47.6% of the time, less than half. An assistant that changes its own pick every other time cannot line up with another assistant very often.
For a brand, this means a single check is not a measurement. Seeing your brand named first in one ChatGPT answer says little about the next answer, and a competitor named first today can be second tomorrow. The brands that come out on top consistently are the ones the assistants name first run after run and engine after engine.
Streaming, travel and cars agree most; finance and insurance least
Categories with a clear market leader show the most agreement. All three assistants name the same first brand on 48% of streaming questions, 45% of travel questions and 42% of car questions. At the bottom, finance and insurance questions reach full agreement on 7% of questions, with fitness and pets at 11% and gaming at 12%.

In finance and insurance, the best choice depends on the buyer's situation, and many providers have a fair claim to the top spot, so each assistant settles on a different one. For brands in these categories, that means the top spot is open. No single company holds it across assistants, so steady coverage in reviews and comparison articles can move a brand up.
A few brands win all three assistants
Where the assistants do agree, a small group of brands takes most of the shared first picks. Chase is the first brand named by all three on 31 travel questions, the most of any brand. Levi's follows on 21 apparel questions, Kia on 19 car questions, HubSpot on 18 software questions and Spotify on 17 streaming questions.
These brands dominate the reviews, rankings and comparison articles each assistant draws on, so every assistant reaches the same conclusion independently. That is the position to aim for: being named first not because one assistant favors you, but because every source it reads points to you.
What this means for brand marketers
Measure AI visibility assistant by assistant. Run your category's key "best" questions in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, ask each question several times, and record how often your brand is named first in each. A brand that ChatGPT names first can be missing from Gemini's first pick.
Then work on the sources all three assistants read: independent reviews, comparison articles, buying guides and your own pages that state clearly what you are best for. The brands that win all three, such as Chase in travel and HubSpot in software, are the ones those sources agree on.
If you work in finance, insurance, fitness or pets, treat the low agreement as an opening rather than a problem. Working with an ai seo company lets you track your brand's first-pick rate across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
