Google's own AI assistant, Gemini, leads its answer with the website Google Search ranks #1 for the same question in 9.5% of answers, so nine times in ten Google's two products point to different sources. ChatGPT matches Google's #1 result twice as often, at 20.2%.

Analysis of 2,313 Gemini answers with sources, covering 1,328 questions · Gemini answers and Google search results, September 2026

    Key Findings

    1. 1.Gemini's first cited website is the same website Google Search ranks #1 for the question in 9.5% of Gemini answers, so Google's AI and Google's search results disagree about nine times in ten.
    2. 2.Google's own Gemini leads with Google's #1 website in 9.5% of answers, less than half the 20.2% rate for ChatGPT.
    3. 3.Google's #1 website appears somewhere in Gemini's list of sources in 30.4% of Gemini answers, three times as often as Gemini puts it first.
    4. 4.61.2% of Gemini answers to general questions cite no website at all, against 2.2% of ChatGPT answers.
    5. 5.Gemini's first source matches Google's #1 website in 17.1% of answers to software questions, the best of any topic, and in 0.9% of answers to investing questions.

    Summary

Search Google for "how do I lower my property taxes" and the first result is one website. Ask Google's Gemini assistant the same question and, when it shows sources, it leads with a different one. Two products from the same company, built on the same index of the web, send the searcher to different places.

That matters for anyone who assumes a Google ranking carries over to Google's AI. Gemini is built into Android phones, Chrome and Google's apps, so it reaches a large audience, and a business that ranks #1 on Google Search cannot count on Gemini citing it first.

Gemini leads with Google's #1 website in 9.5% of answers that cite sources, less than half ChatGPT's 20.2%. And 61.2% of Gemini answers to general questions cite no website at all, so often there is no link to win.

    What we measured

On September 23, 2026 we asked Gemini a set of general questions, from taxes and shopping to software and investing, twice each. On the same day we recorded Google's desktop search results for the same questions from the US. 2,313 Gemini answers, covering 1,328 questions, cited at least one website, and those answers are the basis of the comparison.

For each of those answers we took the first website Gemini cited and compared it with Google's #1 organic result, the top unpaid listing below any ads. We compared websites, not exact pages. We also checked whether Google's #1 website appeared anywhere in Gemini's sources, and whether Gemini's first source was one of Google's top three. ChatGPT figures come from the same comparison run on ChatGPT answers.

Gemini rarely leads with Google's top site

    9.5%
of Gemini answers with sources lead with the website Google Search ranks #1.

In roughly nine answers out of ten, Gemini opens with a different website from the one Google's own search engine puts first. Loosening the test barely helps: Gemini's first source is one of Google's top three websites in 22.7% of answers.

Gemini is further from Google Search than ChatGPT is. ChatGPT leads with Google's #1 website in 20.2% of answers, more than twice Gemini's rate, and its first source comes from Google's top three in 33.5%. Owning the search engine does not make Google's AI assistant follow it.

    Close, but not first

Gemini does cite Google's top result, but rarely first. Google's #1 website appears somewhere in Gemini's list of sources in 30.4% of answers, three times the rate at which Gemini leads with it. Gemini tends to list the top-ranking website further down, after other sources.

First source in Google's top three 22.7% 33.5%
Answers with no source 61.2% 2.2%

On this broader test Gemini edges ahead of ChatGPT, which cites Google's #1 website anywhere in 25.7% of answers. So Gemini draws on Google's top result a little more often than ChatGPT does, but it puts other sources ahead of it. For a business, being in Gemini's sources and being the source Gemini leads with are two different things.

Most Gemini answers show no sources

61.2% of Gemini answers to general questions cite no website at all, against 2.2% of ChatGPT answers. The comparison covers the 2,313 answers that did cite sources, across 1,328 questions.

When Gemini answers without sources, the searcher gets the information with no link to click. For a business, that changes the goal. Winning a citation matters in the four answers in ten that show sources; in the rest, what counts is whether Gemini names your business or states your facts correctly in the text itself.

No topic reaches one in five

Among topics with at least 80 Gemini answers with sources, the match rate runs from 17.1% for software down to 0.9% for investing. No topic reaches one in five. Tech follows software at 14.6% and credit at 13.5%, and weather, with fewer answers, sits at 16.2%.

Software and tech questions are ones where a vendor's own site often owns the answer, and they sit near the top of the list. Even there, Gemini leads with Google's #1 website on 17.1% of software questions and 11.9% of tax questions, so it usually opens with a different website from Google's first result.

    What this means for marketers

Treat Gemini as its own channel, not an extension of Google Search. A #1 Google ranking gives about a one-in-ten chance of being Gemini's lead source, so ask Gemini your priority questions directly and record which websites it cites first and which it cites at all.

Because six in ten Gemini answers carry no sources, work on being named in the answer text too. Consistent facts about your business across your website, your Google Business Profile and well-known third-party websites give Gemini the same information wherever it looks, and mentions in reviews and comparison articles make your name part of the answer.

As an ai seo company, Suff Digital tracks your visibility in Gemini alongside ChatGPT and Google Search, so you can see where a ranking carries over and where it does not.
