The first website ChatGPT cites in an answer is the same website Google ranks #1 for that question 20.2% of the time, so four times out of five ChatGPT leads with a different source. Agreement runs from 69.4% on software questions down to 0.5% on recipe questions.

Analysis of 5,836 ChatGPT answers to 2,960 questions · ChatGPT answers and Google search results, September 2026

    Key Findings

    1. 1.20.2% of ChatGPT answers lead with the same website Google ranks #1 for the same question, so four in five open with a different source.
    2. 2.ChatGPT's first cited website is one of Google's top three results in 33.5% of ChatGPT answers, so two in three open with a website outside Google's top three.
    3. 3.Google's #1 website appears anywhere in ChatGPT's list of sources in 25.7% of ChatGPT answers, which leaves three in four answers that never cite it.
    4. 4.ChatGPT's first source matches Google's #1 website in 69.4% of answers to software questions and 67.9% of answers to tax questions, more than three times the 20.2% overall rate.
    5. 5.ChatGPT and Google lead with the same website in 0.5% of answers to recipe questions and 2.2% of answers to gardening questions.

    Summary

A marketing manager opens the Monday ranking report and sees the company's guide at #1 on Google for the question customers ask most. The same afternoon, a customer types that question into ChatGPT. The answer opens with a link to a different website, and the company's guide is nowhere in the list of sources.

That gap matters because the website ChatGPT cites first is the one it puts in front of the reader. If Google's #1 result and ChatGPT's first source were usually the same, a strong Google ranking would cover both. They are not, so a Google ranking report no longer tells you whether you show up in ChatGPT.

ChatGPT's first cited website matches Google's #1 website in 20.2% of answers. Google's #1 website shows up anywhere in ChatGPT's sources in 25.7% of answers. The topic changes everything: software and tax questions agree about two times in three, while recipe and gardening questions almost never do.

    What we measured

On September 23, 2026 we took 2,960 general questions across 31 topics, from recipes and gardening to taxes and software. Each question went to ChatGPT twice with web search turned on, and to Google as a normal desktop search from the US on the same day. 5,836 of the ChatGPT answers cited at least one website, and those answers are the basis of every figure here.

For each answer we took the first website ChatGPT cited, the source link it leads with, and compared it with Google's #1 organic result, the top unpaid listing below any ads. We compared websites, not exact pages, so a different article on the same website still counts as a match. We also checked whether Google's #1 website appeared anywhere in ChatGPT's sources, and whether ChatGPT's first source was among Google's top three results.

Four in five ChatGPT answers lead with a different site than Google

    20.2%
of ChatGPT answers lead with the same website Google ranks #1.

In every other answer, ChatGPT opens with a website Google did not put first. That is a strict test, so we loosened it. Counting any of Google's top three results, ChatGPT's first source is on the list in 33.5% of answers. Two times in three, ChatGPT leads with a website that is not in Google's top three for the question at all.

ChatGPT is not simply reading Google's first page back to the user. It runs its own search, weighs sources in its own way and often prefers a website that Google ranks lower, or one Google does not show near the top. For a business, a #1 ranking gives roughly a one-in-five chance of being the website ChatGPT leads with for the same question.

Three in four ChatGPT answers never cite Google's #1 website

The overlap stays small even when position in the answer does not matter. Google's #1 website appears anywhere in ChatGPT's list of sources in 25.7% of ChatGPT answers. In the other three answers out of four, the website that won the top spot on Google is not cited at all.

This is not because ChatGPT skips sources. 2.2% of ChatGPT answers with web search cite no website, so almost every answer lists sources. ChatGPT is citing websites nearly every time; they are mostly different websites from the one Google ranks first.

Software, tax and shopping questions agree about two times in three

Agreement depends on the topic far more than on anything else. For software questions, ChatGPT's first source matches Google's #1 website in 69.4% of answers, for taxes 67.9% and for shopping 63.9%, more than three times the 20.2% overall rate. Tech questions follow at 47.9%.

These are topics where one website clearly owns the answer. A question about a software product is best answered by the company that makes it, and a tax question by the tax authority. When one source is that obvious, Google and ChatGPT tend to find it independently. Weather, education, health and mortgage questions sit in the middle, between 24% and 31.1%.

In crowded topics, ChatGPT and Google almost never agree

At the other end, agreement nearly disappears. Recipe questions match 0.5% of the time and gardening questions 2.2%, followed by investing at 3.5%, beauty at 5.8% and real estate at 6.2%. Legal questions match 7.8% of the time and energy questions 7.4%.

These are topics where many websites publish similar content: recipe blogs, garden guides, personal finance sites and beauty publishers. No single website owns the answer, so Google and ChatGPT each pick from a long list of plausible sources and rarely pick the same one. In these topics, ranking #1 on Google tells you almost nothing about whether ChatGPT will lead with you.

ChatGPT often cites the right website but a different page

    12.9%
of ChatGPT answers cite the exact page that ranks #1 on Google.

Matching exact pages instead of websites halves the overlap. Google's #1 page appears among ChatGPT's sources in 12.9% of ChatGPT answers, about one in eight, against 25.1% for any page on the same website. Widening the test to Google's whole first page, 34.6% of ChatGPT answers cite at least one of Google's top 10 pages, so 65.4% cite none of them.

The gap between website and page is widest where ChatGPT and Google trust the same websites. On software questions, 72.2% of ChatGPT answers cite Google's #1 website but 25.8% cite its exact #1 page; on shopping questions the split is 71.6% against 12.4%. Tax questions have the highest exact-page match, 36.6%. ChatGPT often agrees with Google on which website to trust, then picks a different page on it.

What this means for marketers and site owners

Track ChatGPT visibility separately from Google rankings. Take the questions your customers ask most, put each one to ChatGPT and record which websites it cites first and which it cites at all. Repeat the check every month, because the answers change. Where ChatGPT cites your website but not the page that ranks, compare the page it does pick with your ranking page and give the ranking page the direct answer the other one carries.

Then set expectations by topic. If you work in software, taxes or shopping, strong Google rankings carry over to ChatGPT about two times in three, so the pages that already rank well are your best route into AI answers. In crowded topics such as recipes, gardening, investing, beauty or real estate, a Google ranking does little for you in ChatGPT. There, the path is getting mentioned on the websites ChatGPT does cite for your questions, and publishing pages that answer the question more directly than the competition.

As an ai seo company, Suff Digital tracks which websites ChatGPT cites for your customers' questions and shows where your Google rankings do and do not carry over.
