    Summary

Ask Perplexity a question and the answer arrives with a long list of numbered sources underneath. Run the same question on Google and compare. Of every six pages Perplexity cites, about five are pages Google does not show anywhere on its first page for that question.

For website owners, that is good news. A page that ranks on Google's second or third page, or not at all for that exact question, can still be one of Perplexity's sources. It also means Google rank tracking misses most of the pages that feed Perplexity's answers, so the two need to be measured separately.

82.7% of the pages Perplexity cites are not in Google's top 10 for the same question, and 74.4% of the websites it cites have no page there. Every topic tested stays above 75%, from food at 89.8% to mental health at 75.9%.

    What we measured

On September 23, 2026 we asked Perplexity 2,984 general questions, across topics from food and weather to mortgages and mental health. On the same day we recorded Google's top 10 organic results, the ten regular listings on the first page below any ads, for the same questions from a US search. Perplexity's answers cited 54,842 pages in all.

For each cited page we checked whether that exact page was in Google's top 10 for the same question. We also checked each cited website, counting it as on page one if any of its pages ranked in Google's top 10. Finally, we counted which websites supplied the most cited pages that were not in Google's top 10.

Four in five Perplexity sources are off Google's first page

    82.7%
of the pages Perplexity cites are not in Google's top 10 for the same question.

Perplexity and Google overlap only at the edges. About one cited page in six is a page Google ranks on its first page; the rest come from elsewhere. Measured by website rather than by page, 74.4% of the websites Perplexity cites have no page in Google's top 10 for that question.

The gap between those two figures shows how Perplexity picks sources. It often cites a well-known website that Google also trusts, but a different page on it from the one Google ranks. And three times in four it cites a website Google does not show on its first page at all.

Perplexity reads far beyond page one

Perplexity cites 18.4 different pages per answer on average, nearly twice the ten regular results on Google's first page. Even if Perplexity used every one of Google's top 10, it would still need sources from further down or from elsewhere to fill its list.

That breadth is what makes Perplexity different from a search engine. Google ranks a short list and most clicks go to the top few. Perplexity reads widely, then gathers facts from many pages into one answer, and lists them all. For a website, that means more slots to win and less dependence on a single top ranking.

The websites Perplexity reaches for beyond page one

Large reference and publishing websites supply the most cited pages from outside Google's top 10. Yahoo supplied 703 of those pages, YouTube 680, Microsoft 535 and Forbes 510. Wikipedia and the US National Institutes of Health (nih.gov) supplied 490 each, Investopedia 450 and Healthline 434.

For these questions, Google ranked a different page, or a different website, on its first page. Perplexity leans on large, familiar websites that cover almost every subject, and pulls the specific page that best fits its answer, whether or not Google ranks it. For smaller websites, that list shows where to get mentioned: news, reference, finance and health publishers that Perplexity reads constantly.

    Every topic stays above 75%

The gap holds across every topic. In answers to food questions, 89.8% of cited pages are missing from Google's top 10, and weather follows at 89.2%. Nutrition, recipes and tech are all above 85%. Even mental health, the topic with the most overlap, has 75.9% of Perplexity's cited pages outside Google's first page.

Topics with many similar pages, such as food, recipes and weather, show the widest gap, because Perplexity and Google each pick from a large pool. Finance and health topics, where a smaller group of trusted websites dominates, overlap a little more. But in no topic does Google's first page supply even a quarter of Perplexity's sources.

What this means for SEO teams

Perplexity gives pages beyond Google's first page a real chance. If a page answers a question clearly and specifically, it can be cited without a top-10 ranking. Track Perplexity citations separately from Google rankings: ask Perplexity the questions your customers ask and record which of your pages, if any, appear in its sources.

Write for the way Perplexity builds answers. It gathers many facts from many pages, so pages that state specific figures, definitions and steps plainly are easy to cite, even if they rank lower on Google.

Then look at the websites Perplexity reads most. Getting your data or expertise onto reference, news, finance and health publishers can put you into more answers than your own pages can. Working with an ai seo company shows which pages Perplexity cites for your topics and where your brand is missing.
