ChatGPT retrieves 12.8 search results per answer and cites 2.9 sources, but only 0.3% of the retrieved results are the exact pages it cites. ChatGPT finds a website through search, then cites a different page on it: 68% of the websites it cites appear among the websites it retrieved.

Analysis of 138 ChatGPT answers with their retrieved search results · ChatGPT answers and the search results ChatGPT retrieved, September 2026

    Key Findings

    1. 1.Only 0.3% of the search results ChatGPT retrieves while writing an answer are the exact pages it cites in that answer.
    2. 2.On average, 68% of the websites ChatGPT cites in an answer also appear among the websites it retrieved for that answer.
    3. 3.ChatGPT retrieves 4.4 search results for every source it cites: 12.8 results per answer against 2.9 citations.
    4. 4.The median ChatGPT answer retrieves 10 search results, and one answer retrieved 33.
    5. 5.The websites ChatGPT retrieves most, nih.gov and clevelandclinic.org at 58 results each, are not the one it cites most, cambridge.org.

    Summary

Before ChatGPT answers a question that needs current information, it runs a web search and reads the results, much like a person scanning a page of Google links. Then it writes the answer and lists a few sources. It would be natural to assume those sources are the search results it just read.

For a business, that assumption shapes strategy: if ChatGPT cites what it retrieves, ranking in the search results is the whole job. If it cites something else, ranking is only the first step, and the page ChatGPT ends up citing matters as much as the search result that brought it to the site.

At the level of individual pages, it does not hold. Only 0.3% of the search results ChatGPT retrieves are the exact pages it cites. ChatGPT retrieves 12.8 results per answer and cites 2.9, and on average 68% of the websites it cites are among the websites it retrieved. It finds the site through search, then cites a different, more specific page on that site.

    What we measured

On September 23, 2026 we captured 138 ChatGPT answers to everyday questions, asked from a US location, together with the full list of search results ChatGPT retrieved while writing each one. For each answer we counted the distinct pages retrieved and the distinct pages cited, and checked how many cited pages appeared in the retrieved list, both as the exact page and as the same website.

A retrieved result is a web page that came back from the search ChatGPT ran before answering. A cited source is a page ChatGPT links in its finished answer. An exact match means the cited page's web address, compared exactly as recorded, is the same as a retrieved result's, so an address that differs in any detail, such as an added tracking tag, counts as a different page; a website match means the cited page is on a website that appears among the retrieved results, even if the page itself is different.

ChatGPT cites different pages from the ones it retrieves

    0.3%
of the search results ChatGPT retrieves are the exact pages it cites.

At the website level the picture flips. On average, 68% of the websites ChatGPT cites in an answer also appear among the websites it retrieved. The search brings ChatGPT to the right website; the citation then goes to another page on that site, often one that answers the question more precisely than the page that ranked.

That changes what winning a ChatGPT citation takes. Ranking a page in the results ChatGPT searches gets your website considered. Whether you are cited depends on having a page, anywhere on the site, that answers the exact question clearly enough to quote.

ChatGPT reads 4.4 pages for every one it cites

ChatGPT retrieves 12.8 search results per answer on average and cites 2.9 sources, a ratio of 4.4 to 1. The median answer retrieves 10 results, and one answer retrieved 33. For every page that earns a citation, several others were read and left out.

Most of what ChatGPT reads never gets credit. A business can appear in ChatGPT's search results for a question every day and never be cited, because ChatGPT found a better page, on its site or someone else's, to quote.

The most-retrieved websites are not the most cited

Medical and university websites dominate what ChatGPT retrieves. nih.gov and clevelandclinic.org lead with 58 retrieved results each, followed by cambridge.org with 40. The most-cited websites in the same answers are a different list: cambridge.org is cited in 13 answers, nih.gov in 8, wikipedia.org in 7 and consumerfinance.gov in 5.

Cambridge's dictionary site shows the pattern at its clearest: retrieved 40 times and cited in 13 answers, the most of any website, because a dictionary entry answers a definition question in one line. Retrieval volume does not decide citations; the directness of the page does.

What this means for content teams

Treat retrieval and citation as two separate goals. Traditional SEO gets your website into the pool ChatGPT searches. The citation goes to the page that answers the question most directly, which is often a different page from the one that ranked. If ChatGPT lands on your site but cites a competitor, or cites a different page of yours than you expected, the fix is a sharper page for that exact question.

Build pages that are easy to quote: the direct answer in the first sentence or two, specific facts and numbers, and a clear heading that restates the question. Make sure those pages are linked from the pages that rank, so ChatGPT can move from one to the other. An ai seo company that tracks both which of your pages ChatGPT reads and which it cites can show exactly where that gap is.
