Behind each ChatGPT answer, the chatbot runs 1.48 web searches on average that the user never sees, and one question about accounting software triggered 11. Those hidden searches average 8.9 words, against 5.3 for the question the user typed: they are the queries your content really has to match.

    Key Findings

    1. 1.ChatGPT runs 1.48 hidden web searches on average for each question it answers, with a median of one and a maximum of 11.
    2. 2.64.7% of ChatGPT answers rest on exactly one hidden web search, and 6.1% on three or more.
    3. 3.ChatGPT's hidden web searches average 8.9 words, against 5.3 words for the question the user typed.
    4. 4."Best product" questions trigger the most hidden searches in ChatGPT, 1.58 per answer, and health, money and legal questions the fewest, 1.31.
    5. 5.5.3% of ChatGPT's hidden web searches look inside one specific website, such as a software vendor's pricing page.

    Summary

Someone asks ChatGPT for the best accounting software for a small company. Before it writes a word, ChatGPT runs 11 web searches the user never sees: general roundups first, then searches inside the websites of QuickBooks, Xero, FreshBooks and Wave, then a price check for each. The answer that comes back is built from what those searches found.

Those hidden searches decide which pages ChatGPT reads, and a page it never finds cannot be cited. SEO teams have spent years optimizing for the words people type into Google. ChatGPT types its own words, and they look different.

ChatGPT runs 1.48 hidden searches per question on average. Two in three answers rest on a single search, product questions get the most, and the searches are much longer than what people type: 8.9 words against 5.3, with the year, product names and trusted sources added.

    What we measured

On September 23, 2026 we asked ChatGPT, with web search switched on and from a US location, a set of general questions, "best product" questions, industry questions and questions about health, money and legal matters. For 408 of the answers we captured the hidden searches ChatGPT ran in the background to write them, 602 in all.

A hidden search, sometimes called a fan-out query, is a search ChatGPT sends to the web on its own while preparing an answer; the user sees the answer and its sources, not the searches. We counted the hidden searches per answer, compared their length with the question typed, grouped them by kind of question, and recorded how many searched inside one specific website.

Two in three answers, 64.7%, rest on a single search, and the median is one. The long tail is real, though: 6.1% of answers ran three or more searches, and the accounting software question ran 11. For "best free web hosting sites", ChatGPT ran five, including searches inside the websites of GitHub Pages, Cloudflare Pages, Vercel and Netlify.

Product questions trigger the most searching because they need comparison: several brands, their prices, their reviews. Legal questions account for the most answers with hidden searches in the set (25), followed by education (20), fitness (18), travel (16) and mortgages (15). More searching does not mean more citations, though. Answers built on hidden searches cite 3.15 links on average, against 3.66 for other ChatGPT answers to the same set of questions.

Hidden searches are longer and more specific

The average question was 5.3 words; the average hidden search was 8.9. ChatGPT adds what it thinks a good answer needs: the current year, product names, and trusted sources such as the CDC, the USDA or "official". A three-word question becomes a search that names the brands and the authority it expects to find.

For "how cars were invented", ChatGPT searched "history of the automobile invention Karl Benz 1886 first car Smithsonian Britannica". It had already decided the answer involved Karl Benz and 1886, and went looking for the Smithsonian and Britannica to confirm it. A page that matches the typed question but not those details is less likely to be found.

    ChatGPT searches specific websites directly

32 of the 602 hidden searches, 5.3%, looked inside one named website using a site: search, the command that limits results to a single domain. ChatGPT used it to check vendors' own pages: pricing on quickbooks.intuit.com, xero.com, freshbooks.com and waveapps.com, and the free plan on vercel.com/pricing.

When ChatGPT needs a fact about a product, such as its price or what a free plan includes, it can skip the roundups and go straight to the company's own site. The company's pricing and plan pages become the source of record.

What this means for SEO teams

Optimize for the hidden search, not only the typed one. ChatGPT's searches add the year, brand names and authority names, so pages that cover a topic with current dates, named products, clear comparisons and cited sources match what it looks for. Check your key pages against the long, specific version of your buyers' questions.

Keep your own facts public and current. When ChatGPT searches a vendor's pricing page directly, that page has to be public, up to date and easy to read, with prices and plan limits in plain text rather than hidden in images or scripts. As an ai seo company, Suff Digital maps the hidden searches behind your category and the pages that answer them.
