45.5% of the hidden web searches ChatGPT runs to answer a question leave out at least one of the question's meaningful words. ChatGPT keeps the topic but rewrites the wording, swapping casual terms for formal ones and adding years, product names and official sources.

Analysis of 602 hidden ChatGPT searches behind 408 answers · ChatGPT with web search, September 2026

    Key Findings

    1. 1.45.5% of ChatGPT's hidden web searches drop at least one meaningful word from the question the user asked.
    2. 2.A ChatGPT hidden search keeps 78.6% of the question's meaningful words on average, and 2.5% share none of them.
    3. 3.Only 32.5% of the combined words in a user's question and ChatGPT's hidden search appear in both, because ChatGPT adds so many words of its own.
    4. 4.ChatGPT's hidden web searches average 8.9 words, against 5.3 words for the question the user typed.
    5. 5.The word "official" appears in 69 of ChatGPT's 602 hidden web searches, more than any agency name; the CFPB and USDA follow with 11 each.

    Summary

A teenager asks ChatGPT for the best basketball sneakers. ChatGPT searches for "best basketball shoes 2026 performance traction cushioning reviews". The word "sneakers" is gone, replaced by the term reviewers use, and five words the teenager never typed have been added.

This is the gap between the question a person asks and the search that finds the pages ChatGPT reads. Content written to match how people phrase things, word for word, can miss the search ChatGPT actually runs. The pages it finds are the ones written in the vocabulary of experts and reviewers.

45.5% of ChatGPT's hidden searches drop at least one of the question's meaningful words. ChatGPT rarely changes the subject: only 2.5% of its searches share no meaningful word with the question, and on average they keep 78.6% of them. But it adds so much, from years and brand names to agencies such as the CDC and USDA, that only a third of the combined words appear in both.

    What we measured

On September 23, 2026 we asked ChatGPT, with web search switched on and from a US location, a set of general questions, "best product" questions, industry questions and questions about health, money and legal matters. For 408 of the answers we captured the hidden searches ChatGPT ran in the background to write them, 602 in all, and compared each search with the question it served.

Meaningful words, or content words, are the words in the question that carry its meaning, leaving out common words such as "what", "how", "is" and "best". We counted the searches that leave out at least one of them and the share each search keeps. The overall word overlap is the share of all distinct words in the question and the search together that appear in both. We also counted searches that name an agency, a publisher or the word "official".

ChatGPT keeps the topic, rewrites the words

    45.5%
of ChatGPT's hidden web searches drop at least one meaningful word from the user's question.

The dropped words are often casual or vague. "Best basketball sneakers" became a search for basketball shoes. "How to make AI pictures" became "OpenAI image generation ChatGPT how to create images official". "What is the best stock to buy" lost both "stock" and "buy" and became a search about the S&P 500's valuation and earnings outlook. "Vet recommended" became "veterinary nutritionist recommended".

Complete departures are rare: 2.5% of hidden searches share no meaningful word with the question. On average a search keeps 78.6% of the question's meaningful words, then adds its own. At 8.9 words against 5.3, the search is two thirds longer than the question, and the overall overlap between the two falls to 32.5%. ChatGPT keeps your topic and replaces much of your phrasing.

    Hidden searches ask for authority

Many of the added words point to a source. "Official" is the most common, in 69 of 602 hidden searches. Government agencies follow: the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and the USDA in 11 each, the NIH, the CDC and searches limited to .gov websites in 10 each, and the FDIC and SEC in 6 each. The review publisher Wirecutter appears in 5.

ChatGPT often names the authority it expects to find before it has searched. For "does running help you lose weight", it ran one search starting "CDC physical activity weight loss" and another starting "NIDDK weight loss physical activity". For "how to tell if chicken is cooked", it searched "USDA how to tell chicken is cooked 165 F internal temperature". The search is built to land on the official page.

What this means for content and SEO teams

Write for the search ChatGPT runs, not only the words people type. Use the formal and expert terms for your topic alongside the casual ones, such as "basketball shoes" as well as "sneakers", and cover the specifics a hidden search adds: dates, model names, standards and measurements.

Show your sources. Hidden searches regularly name agencies and ask for official information, so pages that cite and link to those authorities, or are the official source themselves, line up with what ChatGPT is looking for. As an ai seo company, Suff Digital maps the hidden searches behind your topics and the wording that matches them.
