When people asked ChatGPT for the best product without mentioning a year, 66.5% of the hidden web searches ChatGPT ran to answer added "2026" on its own. Across every kind of question without a year the rate was 31.2%, and for time-sensitive topics ChatGPT adds the full date.

    Key Findings

    1. 1.66.5% of ChatGPT's hidden web searches for "best product" questions add "2026", although the user never typed a year.
    2. 2.31.2% of ChatGPT's hidden web searches for questions without a year add "2026", and 33% add a year between 2024 and 2027.
    3. 3.ChatGPT adds the year to 13.3% of its hidden searches for general questions, 17.6% for health, money and legal questions and 7.2% for industry questions.
    4. 4.For time-sensitive questions such as stocks and loan rates, ChatGPT's hidden searches add the full date, for example "stocks to watch today September 23 2026".
    5. 5.When a question names an older year, ChatGPT keeps it: "best coffee maker 2025" produced a hidden search for the best coffee makers of 2025.

    Summary

A shopper types "best robot vacuum" into ChatGPT. No year, no brand. The search ChatGPT actually runs is "best robot vacuum 2026 reviews Roborock Dreame Ecovacs". It has decided, on the shopper's behalf, that only this year's reviews will do.

That hidden search decides which pages ChatGPT reads before it answers. A buying guide titled "Best Robot Vacuums" with no date, or one still marked 2025, does not match the search ChatGPT runs, while a page marked 2026 does. For publishers and retailers, the date on a page is part of whether ChatGPT finds it at all.

ChatGPT adds the year to 66.5% of its hidden searches for "best product" questions, two in every three. Across all questions without a year, 31.2% of its searches add "2026". Outside shopping the habit is weaker but still there: one hidden search in eight for general questions carries the year.

    What we measured

On September 23, 2026 we asked ChatGPT, with web search switched on and from a US location, a set of general questions, "best product" questions, industry questions and questions about health, money and legal matters. For 408 of the answers, ChatGPT's data included the web searches it ran in the background to write them, 602 in all.

A hidden search is a query ChatGPT sends to the web on its own while preparing an answer; the user sees the answer, not the searches. For every hidden search behind a question that did not already contain a year, we checked whether the search contained "2026", or any year from 2024 to 2027, and grouped the results by kind of question.

The year is mainly a shopping habit. Two in three hidden searches for "best" questions carry it, against 17.6% for health, money and legal questions, one in eight (13.3%) for general questions and one in 14 (7.2%) for industry questions. Across all question types, 31.2% of hidden searches for year-free questions add "2026".

ChatGPT almost always picks the current year. 33% of searches for year-free questions carry any year from 2024 to 2027, 1.8 points above the "2026" rate, so older and future years are rare. Typical rewrites: "best suv luxury" became "best luxury SUVs 2026 models reviews", and "best brand food for dog" became "best dog food brands veterinarian recommended 2026".

Time-sensitive questions get the full date

For questions about markets and rates, ChatGPT goes further than the year. "What stock should I buy today" produced "stocks to watch today September 23 2026 market news earnings valuation". "What is car loan interest rate" produced "current auto loan interest rates September 2026 average new used car loans USA".

what is car loan interest rate current auto loan interest rates September 2026 average new used car loans USA

When the user names a year, ChatGPT respects it. "Best coffee maker 2025" produced "best coffee makers 2025 Wirecutter Serious Eats Food & Wine", a search for last year's roundups from named publishers. Counting every hidden search, including those for questions that already named a year, 30.9% contain "2026".

What this means for publishers and ecommerce brands

Put the year where ChatGPT's search can see it. For buying guides, roundups and comparison pages, a current year in the title and a visible update date match the hidden search ChatGPT actually runs. Refresh them when the year turns, and make sure the date in the title matches the date on the page.

Date only what you have genuinely updated. The aim is to be the current source, with this year's models, prices and test results, and a page that says 2026 in the title but lists last year's products will not hold its place with readers or with the publishers ChatGPT cites alongside it. For rate and market pages, show when the figures were last updated. As an ai seo company, Suff Digital tracks the hidden searches in your category and keeps the pages that answer them current.
