    Summary

A parent returning to work needs a daycare within a few miles. They search Google, see three centers on the map, and read every review they can find, looking for anything about safety, the teachers and how the director handles problems. Those reviews sit on the Google Business Profile, the free listing that shows a business's reviews, rating, hours, phone number and website in Google Search and Maps.

Choosing childcare is one of the highest-trust decisions a family makes, and parents talk to each other. A review describes the people who care for a child every day, and a reply from the director shows whether concerns are heard. For a daycare, a few critical reviews with no answer can outweigh a lot of quiet satisfaction.

Daycares face tougher reviews than most local businesses. 21.7% of rated daycares sit below 4 stars, against a 13.8% average across 18 local business categories, and one-star reviews mention staff (24.7%) more often than price (21.5%). Yet 60% of daycares never replied to any of their recent reviews, and the median daycare has 6 reviews.

    What we measured

We used two samples of US daycares, collected on September 23, 2026. The first is 470 daycare Google Business Profiles, where we recorded the number of reviews, star rating, website, opening hours, description, claim status, business categories and photos. The second is 553 daycares with at least one review, for which we analysed up to 20 of their newest public Google reviews, 6,231 in all, with each review's star rating, text and any owner reply. We compare every daycare figure with the average of the 18 local business categories in the same study.

A review mentions rude staff when it uses words such as rude, unprofessional, attitude or disrespectful. A profile is unclaimed when no owner has verified it with Google, so the business cannot edit the listing. A daycare "never replied" when none of its 20 newest reviews has a reply from the owner. Negative reviews are one- and two-star reviews. The median is the middle business: half have more, half have fewer. The 18-category average is the simple average of the 18 category figures.

of rated daycare Google Business Profiles sit below 4 stars.

That is more than one and a half times the 13.8% average across 18 categories. The average daycare is rated 4.39 stars, against 4.52, and 32.1% have a perfect 5.0, against 35.7%. Few reviews make those ratings fragile: the median daycare has 6 Google reviews against 27 across categories, 71.3% have fewer than 20, and 1.3% have 100 or more, against 20% on average.

On a profile with six reviews, a single one-star review pulls a perfect rating down by more than half a star. Among daycares with 20 or fewer lifetime reviews, review volume fell 4.2% over the last 12 months compared with the year before, and 28.8% received at least a third of their reviews in a single month. Claimed daycare profiles have a median of 12 reviews against 2 for unclaimed ones.

Parents complain about staff more than price

Daycare complaints are about people more than money: 24.7% of English-language one-star daycare reviews mention rude or unprofessional staff, against 21.5% that mention price or cost. Parents judge a center by how its people treat their child and them, and a tense exchange at pickup is what they write about.

Daycare reviews are also long, averaging 68.5 words over the last 12 months, because parents describe months of care, a specific incident or a teacher they trust. Of five-star reviews, 28.8% use the word "recommend", 8.2% say "friendly" and 5.9% say "professional". A reader gets a detailed picture from every review, good or bad.

Most daycares never reply to parents

60% of daycares never replied to any of their 20 newest reviews, the 5th-highest share of 18 categories, against a 52.8% average. 34.7% of recent daycare reviews carry a reply, 12th of 18, and daycares reply to 28.3% of one- and two-star reviews, 10th of 18, against a 30.8% average. Reviews from the last 30 days get a reply 39.8% of the time, against 55.3% on average.

What this means for daycare centers

Reply to every review, starting with the critical ones about staff. Keep replies calm and factual, never discuss a child or a family's details in public, and invite the parent to talk it through in person. Thank happy parents without naming children or families. Other parents read how a director responds as a preview of how their own concerns would be handled.

Ask for reviews at natural moments: after a child's first month, at the end of the school year, or when a family moves on to kindergarten. With a median of 6 reviews, a center that collects a few dozen honest ones dilutes any single bad experience and gives parents a fuller picture.

Add photos of classrooms, play areas and outdoor space, and a description that covers ages, hours and approach. Suff Digital's local seo packages build review volume and complete Google Business Profiles for daycare and childcare centers.
