    Summary

A tooth has been aching all evening. At 10 pm, the patient searches for a dentist nearby, opens two practice websites and looks for a way to get seen this week. One has a Book Now button with open slots for Thursday morning. The other has a phone number and office hours that start at 8 am. The patient books Thursday before closing the tab.

Online booking lets a patient pick a time without a phone call, at any hour. For a dental practice, the first appointment is the start of years of cleanings and treatment, and many new patients look for a dentist in the evening, after work, when the front desk is closed. A website that only takes calls asks those patients to remember to phone the next day, and some choose the practice that let them book at once.

Most dental practices still work that way. 52.9% of dentist websites offer no way to book online, and 47.1% do. The phone is the default: 80.7% of dentist websites have a tap-to-call link, and 36.2% offer tap-to-call with no online booking at all.

    What we measured

In September 2026 we checked the websites of 522 US dentists listed on Google Business Profiles, looking at each homepage and up to two linked pages. On every site we recorded whether a visitor could book online, call with one tap, fill in a contact form or start a live chat, whether the site showed reviews or testimonials, and which platform it was built on. We measured online booking on the 495 sites not built on Squarespace.

A site offers online booking when it uses a scheduling tool, such as LocalMed, NexHealth, Zocdoc or Calendly, or shows a Book Now, Book Online, Schedule Online or Request an Appointment button or link. A tap-to-call link is a phone number coded so that tapping it on a phone starts the call. A contact form counts when it has three or more fields to fill in, which leaves out search bars and newsletter boxes.

Half of dentist websites take no bookings online

    47.1%
of dentist websites let patients book an appointment online.

The other 52.9% ask patients to call, send a form or walk in. Dental appointments are well suited to online booking: a new-patient exam, a cleaning or a whitening consultation has a set length, and scheduling software used by dental practices can show open chairs in real time. The practices that have not added it are asking every new patient to fit the front desk's hours.

The platform a practice's website runs on makes a difference. 53.6% of dentist websites built on WordPress offer online booking, against 37.5% of those built on Wix and 36.2% of those on other or unidentified platforms.

The phone still comes first for dentists

80.7% of dentist websites have a tap-to-call link, far more than take bookings online. 44.4% offer both, the combination that serves every patient: book now if you know what you need, call if you have a question. 36.2% offer tap-to-call but no booking, and 5.2% offer booking with no tap-to-call link.

The other routes are thinner. 28.9% of dentist websites have a contact form with three or more fields and 13.2% run live chat. At the far end, 10.7% of dentist websites offer none of the four direct routes: no booking, no tap-to-call link, no contact form and no chat. A patient ready to book on those sites has to find the number and dial it by hand.

Dentists that show reviews take more bookings online

61.1% of dentist websites show reviews or testimonials. Those practices are much more likely to take bookings online: 58.6% of dentist websites with reviews offer online booking, against 35.5% of those without, a gap of 23 points.

Both features belong to the same kind of website: one built to turn a visitor into a patient. A practice that puts patient reviews on its homepage has usually thought about what a new patient needs to decide, and online booking is the next step in that path.

What this means for dental practices

If your website takes no bookings online, start with the appointments that are easiest to schedule without a conversation: new-patient exams and routine cleanings. Keep emergencies and complex treatment on the phone. Put a clear Book Now button in the header and on your main service pages, linked to the scheduling system your practice already uses.

If you already take bookings online, make sure patients can also call with one tap, since 5.2% of dentist websites offer booking without a tap-to-call link, and some patients will always want to ask about insurance or cost first. Add your best patient reviews next to the booking button, so the proof sits beside the decision.

Then check the path on a phone the way a new patient would, from search to confirmed appointment. Good medical practice website design makes booking, calling and reviews visible on every page, so fewer patients leave for the practice down the road.
