Summary
Two shoppers open the same online store. One has bought running shoes there twice; the other arrived from an ad for a winter jacket. On a personalized store, the first sees new running gear and the second sees jackets, each with recommendations based on what they browsed. On most stores, both see the same homepage, the same banner and the same best sellers.
Personalization software changes what a store shows to each visitor, using what they have viewed, bought or searched for. It powers product recommendations, "recently viewed" rows, tailored banners and offers, and upsells in the cart. For a store, showing each shopper more relevant products can lift both conversion and order size.
Almost no store uses it. Only 2.1% of online stores run personalization software on their homepage, about one store in fifty. It is a big-store tool: stores among the million most visited websites use it at 8.4%, four times the average.
What we measured
We used the public HTTP Archive crawl of September 2026, which loads the homepages of 15,470,478 websites and records the software each one uses. Of those, 3,911,812 are online stores, sites running a store platform or shopping-cart software, and 729,553 of the stores run on Shopify. Among the online stores, we counted those loading a personalization tool on the homepage, then compared platforms, popularity and country domains.
A personalization tool is software that tailors a website's content or product recommendations to each visitor, such as Dynamic Yield, Nosto, Rebuy, LimeSpot and Monetate. Popularity comes from Google's Chrome UX Report, which ranks websites by how often real Chrome users visit them. The popularity and country comparisons count all websites in each group, not only stores.
Personalization is a big-store tool
That is four times the 2.1% rate across all online stores. Personalization software needs traffic to work: it learns from what visitors do, and a store with a few hundred visitors a day gives it little to learn from. Larger stores also have enough sales to measure the small gains it brings.
The same pattern holds across the web. Among the 1,000 most visited websites of any kind, 4.2% run a personalization tool on their homepage, and business-to-business websites with marketing automation sit at 3.6%. WordPress websites sit at 0.3%.

One online store in fifty personalizes
Across all platforms, 2.1% of online stores run personalization software, 81,587 stores out of 3.9 million. Shopify stores are more than three times as likely to use it, at 6.7%, about 48,700 stores and roughly 60% of every store with personalization software.
Shopify's lead lines up with its app store. Several tools in this category, such as Rebuy and LimeSpot, are built as Shopify apps that add recommendation blocks and cart upsells to a store without a developer. On other platforms, the same features usually take custom work or an enterprise contract, so they stay with the biggest stores.
Personalization fades outside the top 100,000
Across all websites, personalization tools appear on 7.1% of websites ranked 1,000 to 10,000 and 5.3% of those ranked 10,000 to 100,000. Use then drops to 2.9% for websites ranked 100,000 to 1 million, 1.1% for those ranked 1 million to 10 million and 0.5% beyond that, a fourteenfold fall from the peak.

By country domain, use is low everywhere. Australian websites lead at 1.9%, followed by UK and Canadian websites at 1.7% and .us websites at 1.6%. Spanish websites sit at 0.9%, French websites at 0.4% and German websites at 0.3%.
What this means for online stores
For most stores, dedicated personalization software is not the next step. The simpler versions, such as "customers also bought" blocks, recently viewed products and cart upsells, often come with your store platform or a low-cost app. Turn those on first, on product and cart pages where shoppers are deciding.
If you have steady traffic and a catalog large enough that shoppers struggle to find the right product, test a recommendations tool against your current pages and measure average order value and conversion, not clicks on the recommendations. Returning customers are the best place to start, because the software already knows what they bought.
Because only one online store in fifty runs personalization software, a store that does it well stands out. An ecommerce cro agency can run those tests and tell you whether the gain covers the cost of the tool.
