Summary
A shopper knows exactly what she wants: a waterproof hiking boot in size 9. She types "waterprof boots" into a store's search box and gets "No results found." On a second store, the same typo returns waterproof boots, filtered to hiking styles, with her size in stock at the top. She buys from the second store.
Shoppers who use a store's search box have already told the store what they want, which makes them some of its most valuable visitors. A dedicated site search tool replaces the basic search built into a store platform with one that handles typos, synonyms and plurals, ranks results by what sells and shows products as the shopper types. Basic search matches the words typed and often little else.
Dedicated search is a big-store tool. 6.1% of online stores among the million most visited websites use one, about 12 times the 0.5% rate of the smallest stores. Across all online stores the rate is 1.3%, and Shopify stores, which lead on most store add-ons, sit close to that average at 1.6%.
What we measured
We used the public HTTP Archive crawl of September 2026, which loads the homepages of 15,470,478 websites and records the software each one uses. Of those, 3,911,812 are online stores, sites running a store platform or shopping-cart software, and 729,553 of the stores run on Shopify. Among the online stores, we counted those loading a dedicated site search tool on the homepage, then compared platforms, popularity and country domains.
A dedicated site search tool is search software added to a store in place of its platform's built-in search, such as Algolia, Searchanise, Doofinder, Klevu and Boost. The search built into Shopify, WooCommerce and other platforms is not counted. Popularity comes from Google's Chrome UX Report, which ranks websites by how often real Chrome users visit them. The popularity and country comparisons count all websites in each group, not only stores.
Bigger stores buy dedicated search
That is more than four times the 1.3% rate across all online stores, and about 12 times the 0.5% rate of stores ranked outside the top 10 million, one store in two hundred. No other factor in the study moves the rate as much as store size.
The reason is catalog size and traffic. A store with a few dozen products can show most of them on a few pages, so shoppers browse. A store with thousands of products depends on search to connect a shopper with the right item, and has enough searches each day for better results to show up in revenue.

Almost every online store relies on built-in search
Across all platforms, 1.3% of online stores use a dedicated site search tool, 51,817 stores out of 3.9 million, fewer than one in seventy. The rest rely on the search their platform provides.
Shopify, which leads on most store add-ons such as review apps and email marketing, barely stands out here: 1.6% of Shopify stores use dedicated search, close to the all-store figure. WordPress websites sit at 0.3% and business-to-business websites at 1.1%. Search is one of the few parts of a store where most owners, on every platform, accept what came in the box.
Websites ranked 10,000 to 100,000 use dedicated search most
Across all websites, dedicated site search is most common in the upper-middle of the popularity ranking: 2% of websites ranked 1,000 to 10,000 and 2.4% of those ranked 10,000 to 100,000. It falls to 1.9% for websites ranked 100,000 to 1 million, 0.8% for those ranked 1 million to 10 million and 0.4% beyond that. The 1,000 most visited websites sit at 0.7%.

The very largest websites build their own search, which is why the top 1,000 sit below the next tiers. Country makes little difference: UK websites lead at 1.3% and Australian websites follow at 1.1%, while .us, Canadian, German, French and Spanish websites all sit between 0.7% and 0.9%.
What this means for online stores
For most small stores, built-in search is the default, and almost none have replaced it. What matters is whether it works. Search your own store for common misspellings, plural forms, product types and the words customers use rather than your product names, and see what comes back. Every "no results" page is a shopper who told you what they wanted and got nothing.
If your catalog runs to hundreds or thousands of products, check your analytics for how many visits include a search, how often searches end with no results and how search visitors convert compared with everyone else. If search visitors convert well and many searches fail, a dedicated tool is worth testing.
Before paying for one, fix what you can: add synonyms and redirects for common searches, and make sure product titles use the words shoppers type. An ecommerce cro agency can review your site search results and test a dedicated tool against your current search.
