Summary
A small business owner opens a Google Ads account, spends a few hundred dollars over two weeks, sees no sales and gives up. It is the story every paid search skeptic tells. Google's own public record of advertisers does not support it: the businesses showing ads on Google are, for the most part, established, verified accounts that have been doing it for years.
That matters for anyone entering a paid search market, and for anyone who sees an ad and wonders who is behind it. The advertisers you meet in the auction for your keywords mostly have a year or more of data on which searches, ads and landing pages turn into customers. And Google lets anyone check them: tap "About this advertiser" on an ad and it shows the advertiser's verified name and the country where Google verified it.
53.9% of Google advertisers have been showing ads for a year or more, and the median advertiser has been active for 412 days. Only 9.1% have an ad history shorter than a month, and almost a quarter of those were still running ads when the data was collected. 98.9% of advertisers showing Google ads in the US are verified, including advertisers based abroad, who make up about one in eight.
What we measured
Google's Ads Transparency Center is a public database of verified advertisers and the ads they have shown, with the first and last date each ad appeared. On September 23, 2026 we searched it for US advertisers matching 8,000 search keywords and found 5,919; for 5,207 of them we measured the full span of their advertising history. On the same day we looked up 6,110 advertisers showing ads in the US region of the Transparency Center and recorded whether each carries Google's verified flag and the country where it was verified.
An advertiser's active span is the time between the first day any of its ads was shown and the last day any was shown. A long span means the business has been advertising, on and off or continuously, for that long; a short one means either a brief test or a recent start. The median is the middle advertiser: half have a shorter span, half a longer one. An advertiser is verified when Google has confirmed its identity and location and shows that verified name in the ad's "About this advertiser" disclosure. An advertiser is based abroad when the country of verification is not the US, even if all of its ads target US searchers.
Most Google advertisers stay longer than a year
The distribution leans long. 24.5% of advertisers have been active for one to two years and 29.4% for more than two, together 53.9%. The bands from one to twelve months hold 37% combined, and the shortest bands, under a month, hold 9.1%.

The quartiles show the spread. A quarter of advertisers have a span under about 134 days and a quarter are past about 848 days, well over two years. The oldest ads on record were first shown in May 2020, so the longest-running advertisers have been at it for more than six years.
Few advertisers quit within a month
472 advertisers have less than 30 days between their first and last ad, 9.1% of the total, and 140 of them, 2.7%, less than a week. That is the group the "try it and quit" story is about, and it is small.
It is also partly made of newcomers. 23% of the short-span advertisers were still showing ads in the week the data was collected, so their history is short because they have just started, not because they stopped. The share of advertisers who tried Google Ads for under a month and walked away is smaller still.
Most advertisers are running ads right now
Google advertising is less a series of short experiments than a standing channel that most businesses keep switched on. Long-running advertisers also refine as they go. Ads that stay live for many months are usually the ones that work, and an advertiser with years of history has had time to cut the searches that waste money and keep the ones that bring in customers. That is the competition a new account faces on day one.
Almost every Google advertiser is verified
That is 6,040 verified advertisers out of 6,110. Advertisers based in the US itself, 5,381 of them, are 99.1% verified. Verification has reached the point where an unverified advertiser is the exception a searcher is unlikely ever to meet.
The rate stays high across every country with a meaningful number of advertisers. Among countries with at least 40 advertisers showing ads in the US, India has the lowest rate at 95.3%. Several groups, including the United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong and Germany, are fully verified.

One in eight advertisers is based outside the US
11.9% of the advertisers showing Google ads to US searchers, 729 in all, are registered in another country. Canada supplies the most with 141, followed by the UK with 127, Australia with 75, the United Arab Emirates with 54 and India with 43. For a US business, that means some of the competition in its ad auctions comes from companies that have no American office.
Those foreign advertisers are checked too. Canadian advertisers are 97.9% verified, UK advertisers 97.6% and Australian advertisers 97.3%, each within two points of the 99.1% US rate. That answers a common worry, that overseas lead generators run ads in the US without any identity check: the verified name and country in the disclosure apply to them as well.

The unverified 1% are small local accounts
70 of the 6,110 advertisers lack the verified flag. The unverified accounts are mostly small local operators and organizations, the kind of advertiser that runs a handful of ads for one town or one service.
None of the 50 advertisers with the most ads on file is unverified. Where verification is missing, it sits on accounts with a small footprint, which is where a searcher is least likely to meet them. For the ads most people actually see, a verified name is effectively universal.
What this means for businesses starting Google Ads
Plan for months, not weeks. Your competitors have typically been refining their accounts for over a year, and a two-week test rarely produces enough data to judge the channel. Set a budget you can hold for at least three months, decide in advance which results count as success, and judge the channel on cost per lead or sale rather than first-week clicks.
Finish advertiser verification before you launch, and check what it will display: Google shows the verified legal name and country in every ad's disclosure, so make sure they match the brand customers know. A disclosure that reads like an unfamiliar holding company can cost trust at the moment someone is deciding whether to click.
Use the Transparency Center yourself. Search a competitor's name to see how long they have advertised, which ads they keep running and whether foreign advertisers are bidding in your market; the ads that stay live longest are the ones worth learning from. Working with a team that offers ppc management services built on this kind of competitor research shortens the learning period that every new account goes through.
