Summary
It is early on a Saturday morning and a pipe is leaking under the sink. The homeowner searches Google for a plumber and checks the first listing: no hours. The second says "Open 24 hours". The second one gets the call, whatever the first one's actual schedule is.
"Is it open now?" is one of the first things a customer checks on a Google Business Profile, the free listing that shows a business's details in Google Search and Maps. The answer decides whether they call, drive over or move to the next listing. A profile without hours leaves that question open, and a customer in a hurry will not wait to find out.
29.9% of Google Business Profiles do not list opening hours, almost one in three. Most of the gap comes from profiles nobody manages: 67.7% of unclaimed profiles have no hours, against 17.2% of claimed ones. Once an owner takes control of a listing, hours are usually among the first fields filled in.
What we measured
On September 23, 2026 we analysed 23,164 US Google Business Profiles across 54 business categories, from churches and dentists to HVAC companies and garage door companies, and checked the weekly opening hours on each. We compared the share of profiles with no hours by claim status, website, number of reviews and category.
A profile lists opening hours when at least one day of the week shows an opening and a closing time. A profile is claimed when the owner has verified it with Google and can edit it; unclaimed profiles are ones no owner has taken over. Google shows check-in and check-out times for hotels rather than opening hours, so the overall figure covers the other 53 categories.
Unclaimed profiles are the main gap
Claimed profiles are missing hours 17.2% of the time, so an unclaimed profile is almost four times as likely to leave the field empty. That makes sense: only an owner can add or correct hours, and an unclaimed profile has no owner looking after it.
Across all 29.9% of profiles without hours, the pattern is the same. The businesses missing hours are not choosing to hide them; for the most part, nobody has ever opened the listing to fill them in.
Profiles with few reviews and no website skip hours
Missing hours go with every other sign of an unmanaged profile. 62.4% of profiles with no reviews lack hours, against 39.8% of profiles with 1 to 9 reviews and 11.9% of profiles with 100 or more.

Websites tell the same story. Profiles with no website are missing hours 55.7% of the time, against 20.4% of profiles that link a site. The empty fields cluster: a profile without hours is often also without a website, a description and reviews. To a customer comparing three listings on a phone, that profile looks closed or abandoned, even when the business is open and busy.
Professional services skip hours most, home services least
Churches (57.7%), medical practices (52.1%), wedding venues (50.2%), dentists (49.3%) and lawyers (48.6%) are the categories most likely to leave hours blank. Many of these profiles are also unclaimed: 55.2% of dentist profiles and 47.1% of lawyer profiles have no owner managing them.

Home service trades are the most complete. Only 6.6% of garage door companies and 7.4% of HVAC companies are missing hours. Their customers often call with an urgent problem, and these businesses have learned that "Open now" or "Open 24 hours" on the listing wins the call. Appointment-based practices, by contrast, often assume patients will phone ahead, and leave the listing blank.
What this means for local business owners
Search for your business on Google Maps and check what a customer sees. If hours are missing, claim the profile if you have not, and add them. Add holiday hours before each holiday, and use special hours for closures, so customers do not arrive at a locked door.
Appointment-only businesses should still list hours, the times the office answers the phone or sees patients. An empty field tells a customer nothing, and in dental, legal and medical searches about half your competitors leave it empty, so filling it in sets you apart.
While you are there, fill in the fields that travel with hours: website, description and photos. Our local seo packages keep Google Business Profile details, including hours, current for every location.
