31% of US Google Business Profiles have no website link, so a customer who finds the business on Google cannot check its services, prices or booking page. Those businesses trail on almost everything else too: a median of 2 Google reviews, against 27 for businesses that link a site.

    Summary

A customer finds a local auto repair shop on Google Maps. The shop has a phone number and directions, but no website button. There is no way to see what services it offers, what it charges or whether it works on their car, so the customer moves on to the next listing, which has one.

The Google Business Profile is the free listing that shows a business's reviews, hours and contact details in Google Search and Maps, and for many customers it is the first thing they see. The website link is where that customer goes to decide. Without it, the profile is a dead end for anyone who wants to know more before they call.

31% of Google Business Profiles have no website link, almost one in three. And the missing website is rarely the only gap. These profiles have a median of 2 reviews against 27, a median of one photo against 15, and most of them have never been claimed by their owner.

    What we measured

On September 23, 2026 we collected 23,164 US Google Business Profiles across 54 business categories, from churches and auto repair shops to dentists and yoga studios, and checked the website field on each one. We also recorded each profile's reviews, star rating, photos and claim status, and compared profiles with and without a website.

A profile has no website when the website field Google shows on the listing is empty. We counted separately the profiles whose website points only to a Facebook or Instagram page or to a free Google or Square site rather than the business's own domain. A profile is unclaimed when no owner has verified it with Google, which means nobody at the business can edit it, including adding a website. The median is the middle profile: half are above, half below.

Businesses without a website trail on every measure

    2
Google reviews is the median for a business profile without a website, against 27 for a profile with one.

The gap goes well beyond the website field. Profiles without a website have a median of one photo, against 15 for profiles that link a site, and 73.7% of them have fewer than 10 reviews, against 35.2%. Their average star rating is lower too: 4.33 against 4.55.

A missing website is a sign of a listing nobody manages. The same owner who has not added a website has usually not added photos or asked customers for reviews either. To a customer comparing three businesses on Google Maps, that profile looks the least active of the three, whatever the quality of the work.

Most profiles without a website are unclaimed

58.3% of Google Business Profiles without a website are unclaimed, against 14.4% of profiles that link a website. Looked at the other way, 64.5% of all unclaimed profiles have no website.

That is the main reason so many profiles lack a website: nobody at the business has taken control of the listing, and only a verified owner can add the link. Google creates many of these profiles itself from public information, and they sit untouched until the owner claims them. For these businesses, the fix starts with claiming the profile, and the website link takes a minute after that.

Churches, auto shops and barbers skip the website most

51.5% of church profiles have no website, the highest rate of any category, followed by auto repair shops at 49.9% and barber shops at 47.3%. The categories near the top are mostly small, often owner-operated businesses whose customers find them by word of mouth or by walking past.

Trades appear throughout the list: plumbers at 45.3%, electricians at 44% and landscapers at 43.1%. These are businesses whose customers search on Google in a hurry and compare two or three options before calling, which is exactly when a website helps them choose.

What this means for local business owners

Open your Google Business Profile and check the website field. If it is empty, claim the profile if you have not, then add your homepage or, for a business with several locations, the page for that location. If it points to a Facebook page, consider a simple site of your own: a social page does not let you control what visitors see or give them a way to book.

While you are in the profile, fix the gaps that travel with a missing website: add photos, write a description and start asking customers for reviews. Most small businesses can do all of it in an afternoon.

If you do not have a website to link yet, it does not need to be large: a clear page for each service, your service area, prices where you can share them, and a way to call or book. Our small business web design team builds websites and Google Business Profile setups for local businesses that need both.
