    Summary

Someone decides it is time to get back in shape and searches for a gym. Google shows three nearby options on its map, each with a star rating, a review count and a few lines of the latest reviews. Before visiting any of them, the searcher has already judged which one looks busy, friendly and open at 6 a.m. That judgment is made on the Google Business Profile, the free listing that shows a business's reviews, rating, hours, phone number and website in Google Search and Maps.

For a gym, the listing does more work than for most businesses. A membership is a monthly commitment, so people read reviews about crowding, cleanliness, staff and cancellation before they sign. Reviews show that other members stay, replies show that management listens, and the basic fields answer the first practical question: is it open when I can train?

Gyms handle this better than most local businesses. Gyms reply to 44.1% of their one- and two-star Google reviews, against a 30.8% average across 18 local business categories, the highest rate of any category, and 41.8% of gyms never replied to any recent review, against 52.8% on average. 41.1% of gym Google Business Profiles have fewer than 20 reviews, against a 58.2% average, and the median gym has 31 reviews. The weak spot is opening hours, missing from 31.1% of gym profiles.

    What we measured

We used two samples of US gyms, collected on September 23, 2026. The first is 711 gym Google Business Profiles, where we recorded the number of reviews, star rating, website, opening hours, description, claim status, business categories and photos. The second is 555 gyms with at least one review, for which we collected up to 20 of their newest Google reviews, 9,199 in all, with each review's star rating, text and any owner reply. We compare every gym figure with the average of the 18 local business categories in the same study.

A profile is unclaimed when no owner has verified it with Google, so the business cannot edit the listing. A gym "never replied" when none of its 20 newest reviews has a reply from the owner. Negative reviews are one- and two-star reviews. The median is the middle business: half have more, half have fewer. The 18-category average is the simple average of the 18 category figures.

Gyms have deeper review profiles than most local businesses

    41.1%
of gym Google Business Profiles have fewer than 20 reviews.

That is the third-lowest share of 18 local business categories, where the average is 58.2%. The median gym has 31 Google reviews against 27 across categories, 25.9% of gym profiles have 100 or more reviews against 20% on average, and 11.5% have none, against 18.3%. Gyms see the same customers several times a week, which gives members more chances to leave a review than a customer who calls a plumber once.

Ratings are strong too: 4.64 stars on average against 4.52, and 7.5% of rated gyms sit below 4 stars, about half the 13.8% average. Claiming the listing goes with a deeper history. Claimed gym profiles have a median of 53 reviews against 2 for unclaimed ones.

Smaller gyms are losing momentum. Among gyms with 20 or fewer lifetime reviews, review volume fell 7.4% over the last 12 months compared with the year before, and 28.6% received at least a third of their reviews in a single month, the pattern of a one-off push rather than a steady request.

Gyms answer complaints more often than any other local business

Gyms reply to 44.1% of their one- and two-star reviews, the highest rate of 18 categories and well above the 30.8% average. They also reply to complaints slightly more often than to praise: 44.1% against 42.8% for five-star reviews. In most local businesses the reverse is true, and owners thank happy customers while leaving complaints to stand.

41.8% of gyms never replied to any of their 20 newest reviews, against 52.8% on average, and 42.3% of all recent gym reviews carry an owner reply, 7th of 18 categories. Gyms that reply take 4.3 days on average and a median of 3.8 days. Recent reviews are the most likely to get an answer: 62.4% of gym reviews from the last 30 days have a reply. Across all 18 categories, 20.5% of businesses with 200 or more reviews never reply, against 81.7% of businesses with fewer than 10.

One-star gym reviews mention price twice as often as rude staff

Of English-language one-star gym reviews, 35.1% mention price or cost and 15.9% mention rude or unprofessional staff. Fees, contracts and cancellation charges come up in more angry reviews than the people on the front desk. Of five-star reviews, 18.9% use the word "recommend", 14% say "friendly" and 4.8% say "professional". Gym reviews from the last 12 months average 40.9 words, enough to describe a whole visit.

The complaint pattern gives gyms an easy reply: explain the fee or the cancellation terms in plain words, and offer to sort it out in person. A clear reply under a billing complaint reassures every prospective member who reads it.

Opening hours are the gap gyms leave open

Gyms beat the 18-category average on almost every basic field. 24.5% have no website linked, against 35.1% on average, 24.5% are unclaimed against 29.2%, and 35% have no description against 43.9%. 90.2% list wheelchair access, against 62%. The exception is opening hours: 31.1% of gym profiles list none, above the 28.6% average, and for a business people visit before or after work, hours are often the first thing a searcher checks.

Reviews track who wins the map. In a separate Suff Digital study of 3,160 Google Maps searches across 79 US cities, the top three results for "gym" had a median of 101 reviews, against 56 for listings ranked 4 to 20, and 91.1% linked a website, against 89.1%. Chains held 13.9% of top-three spots, and adding "near me" to the search changed the top three in 59.5% of cities, so the map result depends on where the searcher stands.

What this means for gym owners

Fix your hours first. Add regular opening hours plus holiday and special hours, and update them whenever classes or staffed times change: a blank or wrong field sends an early-morning searcher to the next gym. If your profile is still unclaimed, claim it, since an unclaimed profile cannot be edited by the owner and across all 18 categories unclaimed profiles have a median of one review.

Keep the review habit steady rather than seasonal. Ask new members for a review after their first few weeks, when they have formed an opinion, and keep asking all year instead of in one January push. Keep replying to complaints as gyms already do, and put billing and cancellation answers in plain terms.

Then compare yourself with the gyms in your own map results, not national figures: their review counts, reply habits and profile details. Suff Digital's local seo packages build review volume and complete Google Business Profiles for gyms and fitness studios.
