Summary
Someone is rear-ended on the drive home on a Friday evening. By 10 pm they are searching for a personal injury lawyer, opening three or four firm websites on their phone. They want a free consultation, and almost no firm lets them book one: they can call a line that goes to voicemail, or fill in a form and hope someone replies on Monday.
For a law firm, the first contact decides whether a potential client becomes a case. A visitor comparing firms can open the next website in seconds, so the firm that confirms a consultation time first has the edge. Online booking lets a visitor commit to a time the moment they are ready, including evenings and weekends when the office is closed.
96% of law firm websites offer no way to book a consultation online. Firms rely on the phone and the contact form instead: 63.6% have a tap-to-call link and 45.8% have a contact form, while 23.2% offer no direct way to reach the firm at all.
What we measured
In September 2026 we checked the websites of 668 US law firms listed on Google Business Profiles, looking at each homepage and up to two linked pages. On every site we recorded whether a visitor could book online, call with one tap, fill in a contact form or start a live chat, whether the site showed reviews or testimonials, and which platform it was built on. We measured online booking on the 637 sites not built on Squarespace, because the page code of Squarespace sites could not be checked reliably for booking tools.
A site offers online booking when it uses a scheduling tool such as Calendly or Acuity, or shows a Book Now, Book Online, Schedule Online or Request an Appointment button or link. A tap-to-call link is a phone number coded so that tapping it on a phone starts the call. A contact form counts when it has three or more fields to fill in, which leaves out search bars and newsletter boxes.
Fewer than one in twenty law firm websites take bookings online
The other 96% ask a potential client to call or send a message and wait. That wait is where firms lose people. A visitor who fills in a form at 10 pm on a Friday may hear back on Monday morning, by which time they have spoken to another firm that picked up the phone on Saturday.
Law firms often keep scheduling in-house because an attorney or intake specialist needs to screen the case first: checking for conflicts, the type of matter and whether the firm handles it. A booking tool can do that screening too, with a few questions before the calendar opens, so the firm keeps control of who gets a slot while the client gets a confirmed time.
Law firms rely on the phone and the contact form
63.6% of law firm websites have a tap-to-call link, making the phone the most common route into a firm. 59.3% offer tap-to-call and no booking, so for most firms the fastest way to reach them is a call that someone has to answer.

The contact form is the second route: 45.8% of law firm websites have one with three or more fields on their main pages. Live chat is rare at 4.3%. Nearly half of law firm websites, 48.5%, show reviews or testimonials, so many firms work hard to build trust on the page and then ask the persuaded visitor to call or wait for a reply.
At the far end, 23.2% of law firm websites offer none of the four direct routes: no booking, no tap-to-call link, no contact form and no live chat. A visitor on one of those sites has to copy a phone number or an email address by hand.
Law firm websites on Wix offer booking three times as often
Website platform shapes whether booking appears at all. 13.3% of law firm websites built on Wix offer online booking, against 4.2% of those on WordPress and 2.5% on other or unidentified platforms. Wix includes a built-in booking feature that an owner can switch on, while a WordPress site needs a plugin or an embedded scheduler added to it.

WordPress is the most common platform for law firm websites, with 334 of the 668 sites, so the low booking rate there drives the low rate for the whole profession. Adding a scheduler to a WordPress site is a small project, and the firms that do it stand out from almost every competitor.
What this means for law firms
Offer a free consultation that visitors can book themselves. Put a Book a Consultation button in the header of every page and link it to a scheduler that asks two or three screening questions first, such as the type of matter and the state, so your intake team still decides which bookings to confirm. Send an automatic confirmation by email and text.
Keep the phone and the form, but make both faster. Make the number tappable on every page, route after-hours calls to an answering service, and reply to every form within an hour during business hours. Place reviews and results next to the booking button, where a visitor who is ready to act can see them.
Then check your website on a phone the way a client would at 10 pm: count how many taps it takes to get a confirmed consultation. Good law firm web design puts that booking one tap from every page.
