Summary
A B2B marketer spends two hours a week writing LinkedIn posts: opinions on the industry, lessons from client work, practical how-tos. The posts get likes and comments. Then a prospect asks ChatGPT the same question one of those posts answered, and the sources listed under the answer do not include LinkedIn at all.
That gap matters because a citation is the source link an AI engine shows with its answer, and it is how an answer sends readers to the people behind it. Content that AI engines do not cite reaches the people who follow you on LinkedIn, but not the people asking AI for advice.
AI engines cite LinkedIn in 1.6% of their answers to business questions, fewer than one in 60. Gemini never cited it, and ChatGPT cited it in 3 of 1,136 answers. When LinkedIn does appear, it is mostly through long-form articles on careers and general business questions, not posts.
What we measured
On September 23, 2026 we asked 568 business questions to five AI engines: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews (the AI summary above Google's search results). The questions covered general business, careers and software topics, plus "best" questions about software, office products and business services. Each was asked twice on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI features and once on Perplexity, producing 4,966 answers.
An answer counts as citing LinkedIn when at least one of its sources is a page on linkedin.com. We also sorted the 96 cited LinkedIn pages by type: long-form articles (LinkedIn's publishing platform, also called Pulse), posts, collaborative articles, job listings, company pages, profiles, and LinkedIn's own pages about advertising and hiring.
Fewer than one AI business answer in 60 cites LinkedIn
LinkedIn holds a large share of the professional writing published online, and it is where many B2B marketers put their thought leadership. AI engines rarely use it. 81 of the 4,966 answers cited a LinkedIn page, and across all those answers the engines cited 96 LinkedIn pages in total.
Much of what is published on LinkedIn is short posts that live in a feed rather than on a stable page, which gives an AI engine less to read and cite than an article on a public website. The result is that effort spent on LinkedIn reaches LinkedIn's audience and very little of the audience asking AI.
Gemini never cited LinkedIn and ChatGPT almost never did
Perplexity is the engine most willing to cite LinkedIn, in 4% of business answers. Google AI Mode (2.6%) and Google AI Overviews (2.5%) follow, about one business answer in 40. ChatGPT cited LinkedIn in 0.3% of answers, 3 out of 1,136, and Gemini not once.

The split matters for anyone relying on LinkedIn for visibility. On ChatGPT and Gemini, a LinkedIn article is close to invisible. On Perplexity and Google's AI features it has a small chance of being cited, mostly on the topics where LinkedIn content is strongest.
Careers questions pull in LinkedIn
LinkedIn shows up where its content is strongest: careers advice and general business how-to questions. AI answers to careers questions cite it 4.8% of the time, about one in 21, and general business questions 4.5%.

Buying questions are different. When people ask for the best CRM or the best office chair, AI engines turn to review sites and vendor pages, and LinkedIn all but disappears: 0.7% of "best software" answers, 0.1% of "best office products" answers and none of the 854 "best services" answers cited it. A B2B company hoping LinkedIn content will get it recommended in AI buying answers is looking in the wrong place.
Long-form articles beat posts
Of the 96 LinkedIn pages cited, 33 were long-form LinkedIn articles, 34.4% of the total, and 15 were posts, 15.6%. Collaborative "top content" articles added 11 and job listings 10.

An article has its own permanent address, a title and enough text to answer a question, which is what AI engines cite. A post is short and lives in a feed. Company pages were cited 4 times and personal profiles once, so a well-kept company page does little for AI visibility on its own. Several citations went to LinkedIn's own pages about advertising, hiring and business services.
What this means for B2B marketers
Publish your best thinking on your own website first. Across 4,966 AI answers, LinkedIn posts were cited 15 times. A full article on your site, with your name and credentials attached, can be read and cited by every AI engine; share it on LinkedIn afterwards to reach your followers.
If you do publish on LinkedIn, use long-form articles rather than posts, and focus on careers and management topics, where LinkedIn has a chance of being cited on Perplexity and Google's AI features. When a LinkedIn article performs well, turn it into a fuller page on your own site.
For buying questions, invest where AI engines look: your own product pages, review profiles and third-party coverage. As a b2b seo agency, Suff Digital shows B2B companies which sources AI engines cite in their category and where their content should live.
