62% of AI answers to "best software" questions cite the website of a vendor they recommend, so the vendor's own pages help make the case for it. One answer in six cites the vendor's own blog or guide, and on Perplexity it is 48%.

Summary
A small business owner asks ChatGPT for the best CRM for a five-person sales team. The answer names four products and lists its sources underneath. One of those sources is a CRM vendor's own guide to choosing a CRM, and that vendor is on the shortlist.
That pattern matters to anyone who sells software. A citation is the source link an AI engine shows next to its answer, and it tells you which pages the engine read to build its recommendation. If the engine reads your pages, your own words about your product shape how it describes you, not a reviewer's or a competitor's.
It happens often. 62% of AI answers to "best software" questions cite a page on the website of a vendor they recommend, and 16.8% cite that vendor's blog post, guide or resources page. Perplexity is the most willing to use vendor content, and Gemini the least.
What we measured
On September 23, 2026 we asked 100 "best software" questions about CRM, accounting and project management software to five AI engines: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews (the AI summary above Google's search results). That produced 876 answers. For each answer we recorded the brands it recommended and every web page it cited.
A citation counts as vendor-owned when the cited website belongs to a software brand named in the same answer, for example a HubSpot page cited in an answer that recommends HubSpot. A vendor blog citation is a vendor-owned page from the company's blog, guides or resources section, as opposed to a product, pricing or help page. Every figure is a share of answers: an answer counts once, however many vendor pages it cites.
One in six AI software answers cites a vendor's blog
AI engines do not build software recommendations from review sites alone. In 62% of answers they cite at least one page on the website of a vendor they recommend, such as a product or pricing page that confirms features and plans. In 16.8% of answers, about one in six, the cited vendor page is editorial content: a blog post, a buyer's guide or a resources article.
Those editorial pages carry more weight than a pricing page. A product page confirms a fact; a guide explains how to choose, and the engine can borrow its framing, its criteria and its comparisons. A vendor whose guide becomes the source for an answer has written part of the answer.
Perplexity cites vendor blogs in almost half its software answers
Perplexity uses vendor content more than any other engine. 92% of its software answers cite a recommended vendor's website and 48% cite a vendor's blog or guide. ChatGPT is close behind on vendor websites at 85.5%, but cites vendor blogs in 22% of answers.

| AI engine | Cite a vendor's website | Cite a vendor's blog |
|---|---|---|
| Perplexity | 92% | 48% |
| ChatGPT | 85.5% | 22% |
| Google AI Mode | 73.5% | 10.5% |
| Google AI Overviews | 56.8% | 13.6% |
| Gemini | 16.5% | 5% |
Google's two AI features sit in the middle: AI Mode cites a vendor website in 73.5% of software answers and AI Overviews in 56.8%. Gemini stands apart. 16.5% of its software answers cite a vendor website and 5% a vendor blog, so it builds its recommendations almost entirely from third-party sources. The same software brand can therefore be described in its own words on Perplexity and in a reviewer's words on Gemini.
HubSpot and Zoho are the most-cited vendor websites
Counting every citation of a vendor's website, the large CRM and accounting brands lead. HubSpot's website is cited 270 times, Zoho's 201 and Xero's 110, followed by Salesforce at 94 and Attio at 65. These are the best-known names in their categories, and the engines check their pages to confirm features and pricing.

Few of those citations are blog content. Of HubSpot's 270 citations, 20 are blog or guide pages; of Zoho's 201, 10 are. A large brand gets cited because it is on the shortlist, and the engine visits its site to check the details.
Project management vendors win the blog citations
The vendor-blog ranking looks different. Asana's blog and guides are cited 40 times, ClickUp's 32 and Fieldwire's 23, all ahead of HubSpot's 20 and Salesflare's 14. For these companies, blog content is a large part of how AI engines find them: 40 of Asana's 59 citations are blog or guide pages, 32 of ClickUp's 44, and all 23 of Fieldwire's.

These vendors publish guides that match the exact questions buyers ask, such as roundups of project management software for construction teams. When a vendor has written the most useful page on a narrow question, AI engines cite it even in answers that also recommend its competitors. Fieldwire, a construction project management tool, earns every one of its citations this way.
What this means for software companies
Write the guide your buyers would search for. Publish comparison pages and buyer's guides for the exact categories you compete in, such as "best CRM for small business" or "project management software for construction", and be fair to competitors in them: an engine that cites your guide is building a balanced shortlist, and a sales pitch gives it nothing to use. Keep pricing and plan pages public and current, since engines cite them to confirm what you offer.
Do not rely on your own site alone. Gemini cites vendor websites in 16.5% of software answers, so third-party reviews, software directories and independent roundups decide how it describes you. Being named comes first and being cited as the source comes second, and both need work.
Then check where you stand: ask each engine the questions your buyers ask and note which pages it cites. Our saas seo agency team tracks those citations for software companies and plans the content that earns them.
