Reuters is cited in more AI answers to news questions than any other outlet, 328 in all, 250 of them from ChatGPT. Each AI engine has its own favorite newsrooms, from wire services on ChatGPT to finance outlets on Google AI Mode.

- 1.Reuters is the most-cited news outlet in AI answers, in 328 answers, 250 of them on ChatGPT and 78 on Google AI Mode.
- 2.CBS News is the second most-cited news outlet in AI answers, in 262 answers, and the most evenly spread across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode.
- 3.Google AI Mode cites CNBC in 126 news answers, against 1 for ChatGPT.
- 4.AP News (243 answers), the Guardian (197) and Al Jazeera (165) complete the five most-cited news outlets in AI answers.

Summary
Ask ChatGPT about a breaking story and the answer often links to Reuters. Ask Gemini the same question and it is more likely to point to CBS News. Ask Google AI Mode about the markets and it sends you to CNBC or Yahoo Finance, two outlets ChatGPT barely touches.
For publishers, a citation in an AI answer is a reader sent their way at the moment of interest. For PR and communications teams, the outlets an AI engine cites decide which coverage reaches people who ask it about a company or an event. "Getting into AI" means getting into three different systems, each with its own reading list.
Reuters is the AI engines' go-to newsroom overall, led by heavy citation from ChatGPT and Google AI Mode: it appears in 328 answers, 250 of them from ChatGPT. CBS News, AP News, the Guardian and Al Jazeera complete the top five.
What we measured
On September 23, 2026 we asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode 1,000 news questions, twice each and six hours apart, giving 5,556 answers. We counted, for every news outlet, how many answers cited it, on each engine and in total.
A news outlet is one of the 1,283 publisher websites that appeared in 2,000 Google News result pages for the same questions, leaving out social media, reference and government sites. An answer cites an outlet when at least one of its source links points to that outlet's website; an answer that cites Reuters twice counts once.
Reuters leads, carried by ChatGPT
250 of those answers come from ChatGPT and 78 from Google AI Mode. CBS News, second with 262 answers, is the most balanced of the top outlets: 79 on ChatGPT, 118 on Gemini and 65 on Google AI Mode. AP News (243) leans on ChatGPT, which accounts for 165 of its answers.

The Guardian (197) and Al Jazeera (165) are the only other outlets cited in more than 150 answers, and both are spread fairly evenly across the three engines.
Every AI engine has a different news diet
Google AI Mode leans on finance and sports outlets far more than the others. It cites CNBC in 126 news answers, where ChatGPT cites it once. Yahoo Finance appears in 115 AI Mode answers, the Wall Street Journal in 84 and ESPN in 59. Gemini leans on CBS News, the Guardian and AP News, and cites Fox Sports in 31 answers. ChatGPT concentrates on Reuters and AP News.

The same story can reach a reader through very different outlets depending on the engine. 41.1% of AI answers to news questions, 2,283 of 5,556, cite at least one news outlet, so a news placement is a real route into AI answers on the engines that read that outlet. An outlet that is central to one engine can be invisible on another.
What this means for publishers and PR teams
Target coverage by engine. For ChatGPT, wire services such as Reuters and AP News matter most. For Gemini, broadcast and international outlets such as CBS News, the Guardian and Al Jazeera. For Google AI Mode, finance and sports outlets such as CNBC, Yahoo Finance, the Wall Street Journal and ESPN.
Before a launch or announcement, ask each engine the questions your audience will ask and note which outlets it cites. Pitching the outlets each engine already relies on gives a story its best chance of appearing in AI answers.
