Paywalls are no barrier to AI citations: 16.7% of AI answers that cite a news outlet include a paywalled one, about one in six. Which paywalled outlets get cited depends on the engine, from the Wall Street Journal on Google AI Mode to the Los Angeles Times on ChatGPT.

Summary
A reader asks an AI engine about a developing story. The answer cites the Wall Street Journal, and the link leads to a subscription page. It happens in about one news answer in six: AI answers sometimes cite paywalled outlets, so the reader may land on a subscription page.
For publishers, this settles a practical point: charging for journalism does not keep you out of AI answers. What decides whether an engine cites you is which engine it is, not whether you charge. For readers and PR teams, it shows which paywalled outlets each engine actually reads.
Across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode, 16.7% of answers that cite a news outlet include a paywalled one. The engine decides which: the New York Times appears on 253 of 2,000 Google News result pages, more than any other paywalled outlet, and all 36 of its AI news citations come from Google AI Mode.
What we measured
On September 23, 2026 we asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode 1,000 news questions, twice each. 2,283 of the answers cited at least one news outlet, meaning a publisher that appears in Google News results for the same questions. For each of those answers we checked whether any cited outlet was one of 32 publishers with a paywall, and compared paywalled outlets' share of news citations with their share of 2,000 Google News result pages.
A paywalled outlet charges readers for full access, either for every article (a hard paywall) or after a few free articles a month (a metered paywall). The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post and the Financial Times are examples. A news-citing answer is one with at least one source link to a news outlet.
One AI news answer in six cites a paywalled outlet
Google AI Mode cites paywalled outlets most often, in 19.9% of its news-citing answers (189 of 951). ChatGPT follows at 16.6% (119 of 717) and Gemini at 12% (74 of 615). Google News itself includes a paywalled outlet on 39.8% of its result pages, so a list of news results is more than twice as likely as an AI answer to point to a paywall.

ChatGPT cites paywalled outlets at their Google News rate
Measured by citations rather than answers, paywalled outlets receive 7.1% of ChatGPT's news citations. That is in line with their 6.9% share of Google News results. ChatGPT neither favors nor avoids paywalled journalism as a group; it cites paywalled publishers about as often as they appear in the news.
What changes is which paywalled publishers it cites. The group total hides large differences between outlets, and between engines, that matter more to any single publisher than the overall rate.
Each engine cites different paywalled outlets
The Wall Street Journal is the most-cited paywalled outlet, in 101 AI news answers, 84 of them on Google AI Mode. The Washington Post (60), Business Insider (59), the Los Angeles Times (58) and the Sacramento Bee (53) follow. The Los Angeles Times is cited almost entirely by ChatGPT, in 50 answers, while Business Insider comes mostly from Gemini, in 44.

The New York Times shows the gap most sharply. It is the paywalled outlet Google News shows most, on 253 result pages, yet all 36 of its AI citations come from Google AI Mode. The Times blocks all of OpenAI's crawlers in its robots.txt file, the instructions a website gives to bots, which explains its absence from ChatGPT's answers. A publisher's presence in AI answers is decided engine by engine, partly by the publisher's own crawler rules.
What this means for publishers
A paywall does not stop AI engines from citing you, so the decision to charge for journalism can be made on its own merits. What decides your presence is each engine's choice of sources. Check which engines cite you today by asking them the questions your stories answer, and compare the result with your AI crawler rules and any licensing agreements, which you control.
Because an AI answer may cite a source the reader cannot open, make sure what AI engines can see represents the story accurately: a clear headline, an informative first paragraph and a summary that stands on its own. Working with an ai seo company helps publishers see how their content appears in answers from each AI engine.
