86% of restaurant websites offer no way to book online, and 58.7% have no tap-to-call link, so a diner who is ready to reserve usually has to find the phone number and dial it by hand.

Summary
It is Friday afternoon and someone wants a table for four at eight o'clock. They search the restaurant, open its website on their phone and look for a way to reserve. On most restaurant websites there is none: no booking tool, no Book Now button, and often no phone number they can tap to call.
A restaurant website has one main job for a new customer: turn interest into a reservation or a visit. Every step between "this looks good" and a confirmed table is a chance for the diner to pick the place down the street that lets them book in two taps.
86% of restaurant websites offer no way to book online. The phone link is the more common route, but 58.7% of restaurant websites do not have one either, and 36% offer no direct way to reach the business at all.
What we measured
In September 2026 we checked the websites of 150 US restaurants listed on Google Business Profiles, looking at each homepage and up to two linked pages. On every site we recorded whether a visitor could book online, call with one tap, fill in a contact form or start a live chat, and whether the site showed reviews or testimonials. We measured online booking on the 135 sites not built on Squarespace.
A site offers online booking when it uses a booking or reservation tool such as OpenTable or Resy, or shows a Book Now, Book Online, Schedule Online or Request an Appointment button or link. A tap-to-call link is a phone number coded so that tapping it on a phone starts the call. A contact form counts when it has three or more fields to fill in, which leaves out search bars and newsletter boxes.
Six in seven restaurant websites take no bookings online
That leaves 86% of restaurants relying on a phone call, a walk-in or a third-party app the diner has to find on their own. For a business where most visits are planned a few hours or a few days ahead, that is a large gap: the diner who wants to lock in a time has to switch from browsing to calling, during opening hours, while the kitchen is busy.
The rate is similar across the main website platforms. Restaurant websites built on WordPress offer online booking 11.1% of the time, and sites on other or unidentified platforms 14.8%. The platform is not what holds restaurants back: adding a reservation widget or a Book a Table link works the same way on any of them.

The phone is still the main way to reach a restaurant
The phone link is the most common route on restaurant websites. 41.3% have a tap-to-call link, about three times the share that take online bookings. 31.3% of restaurant websites offer tap-to-call and no booking at all, so for nearly a third of restaurants the only fast way to reserve is to ring.

The other routes are rare. 16.7% of restaurant websites have a contact form with three or more fields and 5.3% run a live chat widget. Only 12.7% show reviews or testimonials, a missed chance to show a hungry visitor that other diners liked the food.
More than a third of restaurant websites offer no direct way to act
36% of restaurant websites offer none of the four direct routes: no online booking, no tap-to-call link, no contact form and no live chat. A visitor on one of those sites can read the menu and the address, but to reserve they have to copy the number into their phone, search for the restaurant on a booking app, or give up.
On a phone that friction is worse than on a desktop, because copying a number or switching apps takes several steps. A tap-to-call link takes minutes to add, and a booking button linked to the reservation system a restaurant already uses takes little longer.
What this means for restaurant owners
Put a Book a Table button in the header of every page and link it straight to your reservation system, whether that is OpenTable, Resy or the booking page of your point-of-sale system. Diners who can reserve in two taps do not have to call during your busiest hours, and they book at eleven at night when the phone would go unanswered.
Next, make the phone number tappable on every page. Tap-to-call is the most common route on restaurant websites, yet 58.7% still lack it. Add a short enquiry form for events and large groups, and show a few recent reviews near the booking button.
Then test the path yourself on a phone: search your restaurant, open the site and time how long it takes to book a table. If it takes more than a few taps, our conversion optimization services can show where diners drop off and fix the booking and contact flow.
