Summary
A practice owner opens Google Ads to fill the schedule with implant consultations and routine checkups. The prices on screen span two different markets: "dentist near me" costs $13.92 a click, while "dental implants consultation" costs $41.38. Both are dental searches, and one costs three times the other.
Cost per click, or CPC, is what an advertiser pays each time someone clicks its ad in Google's search results, whether or not that person books. It decides how many visits a monthly budget buys, and so how many new patients the budget can bring in. Knowing which dental searches are cheap and which are expensive tells a practice where its ad money goes furthest.
On average, dental clicks are good value. A click on a dental Google Ads keyword costs $8.25, 24% less than the $10.82 average across 18,477 keywords in 23 industries, and half of dental keywords cost $7.41 or less. The expensive exceptions are the ones practices care most about: implant searches, which top the price list, and "near me" searches, which cost 53% more than other dental keywords.
What we measured
In September 2026 we collected Google Ads Keyword Planner prices for 970 dental keywords, each searched at least 2,900 times a month in the US. For those keywords we calculated the average, median and spread of cost per click, and compared dental prices with 18,477 keywords across 23 industries. We also collected state-level prices for the 25 largest US states, and Microsoft Ads prices for the 462 dental keywords priced on both platforms.
Cost per click is Google's estimate of the average price an advertiser pays for one click on an ad shown for that search. The median is the middle keyword: half cost less, half cost more. The volume-weighted average counts each keyword by how often it is searched, so busy searches count for more than rare ones. Each state is compared with the national price of the same keywords, so a state's percentage shows how much more or less a local practice pays for identical searches.
Dental clicks cost less than the cross-industry average
Dentistry sits 13th of 23 industries by average cost per click, and its $8.25 average is 24% below the $10.82 average across all industries. The median dental keyword costs $7.41, and the middle half of dental keywords cost between $4.12 and $11.29 a click. The most common price band is $5 to $10, which holds 365 keywords, 38% of the total.

| CPC range | Keywords | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Under $1 | 66 | 6.8% |
| $1 to $2 | 54 | 5.6% |
| $2 to $5 | 185 | 19% |
| $5 to $10 | 365 | 38% |
| $10 to $20 | 270 | 28% |
| $20 to $50 | 29 | 3% |
| $50 to $100 | 1 | 0.1% |
The simple average understates what practices pay for the searches with real volume. Weighted by how often each keyword is searched, the dental average rises to $9.40, because the most-searched terms cost more than the typical keyword. The biggest of them, "dentist near me", is searched 1.83 million times a month and costs $13.92 a click. Across the 54 dental keywords that contain "near me", the average is $12.28, against $8.01 for all other dental keywords, 53% more. 31% of dental keywords cost $10 or more per click.
Implant searches are the most expensive dental clicks
The top of the price list is steep. The most expensive 10% of dental keywords cost $15.50 or more, and the single priciest, "cavity on front of tooth", costs $71.24, more than eight times the dental average. After that outlier, implant searches dominate: "dental implants consultation" at $41.38, "dental implants for missing teeth" at $39.63, "dental implants specialists" at $32.19 and "dental implants dentist" at $31.27.

| Keyword | CPC | Monthly searches |
|---|---|---|
| cavity on front of tooth | $71.24 | 9,900 |
| dental implants consultation | $41.38 | 8,100 |
| expander for teeth | $40.74 | 8,100 |
| dental implants for missing teeth | $39.63 | 9,900 |
| dental implants specialists | $32.19 | 6,600 |
| dental implants dentist | $31.27 | 14,800 |
| dental practice management software | $29.73 | 12,100 |
| full mouth dental implants | $29.36 | 12,100 |
| affordable dental implants | $28.52 | 6,600 |
| dentist for sensitive teeth | $27.26 | 9,900 |
| dental malpractice attorney | $27.10 | 12,100 |
| dental exchange | $26.08 | 9,900 |
Implants cost more to advertise because each case is worth far more to a practice than a checkup, so practices can afford to bid high for a patient researching one. Not every expensive keyword is a patient search: "dental practice management software" ($29.73) and "dental malpractice attorney" ($27.10) are priced by software companies and law firms, which compete for dental words too. A practice advertising general dentistry rarely needs to pay these prices.
Arizona pays the most for dental clicks
Location changes the price of the same search. Among the 25 largest states, Arizona is the most expensive for dental clicks at $11.57 on average, 38% above the national price of the same keywords, followed by Colorado at $11.15 (32% above) and Florida at $10.60 (27% above). Pennsylvania is the cheapest at $6.53, 21% below, with Wisconsin at $6.55 and Louisiana at $6.56.

| State | Keywords | State mean CPC | vs national |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arizona | 715 | $11.57 | +38% |
| Colorado | 675 | $11.15 | +32% |
| Florida | 840 | $10.60 | +27% |
| Wisconsin | 647 | $6.55 | -19% |
| Louisiana | 564 | $6.56 | -21% |
| Pennsylvania | 738 | $6.53 | -21% |
For a practice, this means national benchmarks can mislead in either direction. A dental click in Arizona costs about $5 more than one in Pennsylvania, so a budget that fills the appointment book in Pennsylvania buys far fewer visits in Arizona. Plan budgets from local prices, not from the national average.
Each state's percentage compares it with the national price of that state's own keyword set, the dental keywords priced in that state. That is why Wisconsin, at $6.55, sits 19% below national while Louisiana, at $6.56, sits 21% below: the two states are priced on different keywords.
Microsoft Ads charges 75% less for the same dental searches
For the 462 dental keywords priced on both platforms, a click on Microsoft Ads, which shows ads on Bing search, costs $2.18 on average against $8.64 on Google Ads, 75% less. The same search phrase costs about a quarter as much on Microsoft's network as on Google's.
Timing matters too. Dental search demand peaked in January 2026 and was lowest in June 2026, with 28% more searches in January than in June. Practices that hold budget back for the start of the year meet the most patients looking for a dentist.
What this means for dental practices
Split implant and cosmetic campaigns from general dentistry. Implant keywords cost several times the dental average, but a single implant case is worth far more than a checkup, so they deserve their own budget, their own ads and a landing page that answers cost, financing and consultation questions.
Treat "near me" searches as your most valuable and most expensive traffic. At 53% more per click than other dental keywords, they reward a strong Google Business Profile and local landing pages, which can win the same searches without paying for every click. Then copy your best Google campaigns to Microsoft Ads, where the same keywords cost about a quarter as much.
Finally, set budgets by state and by season: expect to pay more in Arizona, Colorado and Florida, and plan for the January peak. As a dental ppc agency, Suff Digital prices every campaign from local click costs.
