    Summary

A new puppy needs its next round of shots. After the kids are in bed, the owner searches for a vet nearby and opens two practice websites. One has a Book Now button with a Saturday morning slot for a puppy visit. The other lists its services and a phone number, with the front desk closed until morning. The puppy goes to the first practice, and so do its next ten years of checkups.

Online booking lets a pet owner pick a time without a phone call, at any hour. For a veterinary practice, wellness visits, vaccinations and dental cleanings are planned in advance, and each new client can mean a decade of visits. A website that takes those bookings at night wins clients while the front desk is closed, and leaves the phone free for sick pets and emergencies.

Most practices do not offer it. 53.5% of veterinarian websites offer no way to book online, and 46.5% do. The practices that show client reviews are far ahead: 65.5% of them take bookings online, almost three times the 22.5% of practices whose websites show no reviews.

    What we measured

In September 2026 we checked the websites of 747 US veterinarians listed on Google Business Profiles, looking at each homepage and up to two linked pages. On every site we recorded whether a visitor could book online, call with one tap, fill in a contact form or start a live chat, whether the site showed reviews or testimonials, and which platform it was built on. We measured online booking on the 714 sites not built on Squarespace.

A site offers online booking when it uses a scheduling tool, such as Calendly, Acuity or Square Appointments, or shows a Book Now, Book Online, Schedule Online or Request an Appointment button or link. A tap-to-call link is a phone number coded so that tapping it on a phone starts the call. A contact form counts when it has three or more fields to fill in, which leaves out search bars and newsletter boxes.

Half of veterinarian websites take no bookings online

    46.5%
of veterinarian websites let pet owners book an appointment online.

The other 53.5% ask clients to call or send a form. Much of a vet's work suits online booking: annual wellness exams, vaccinations, nail trims and dental cleanings have a set length and are booked days or weeks ahead. A practice without booking routes every one of those requests through a front desk that is also checking in patients and answering calls about sick animals.

The website platform makes a difference. 52.6% of veterinarian websites built on WordPress offer online booking, the highest of any platform, followed by 44.7% of those on other or unidentified platforms and 19.6% of those built on Wix.

Vets that show reviews are almost three times as likely to take bookings online

61.3% of veterinarian websites show client reviews or testimonials. Those practices are far more likely to take bookings online: 65.5% of veterinarian websites with reviews offer online booking, against 22.5% of those without, almost three times the rate and a gap of 43 points.

Both features mark a website built to win new clients rather than serve as a listing. Pet owners choose a vet the way they choose a doctor for a family member, and reviews from other owners carry weight. A practice that puts those reviews on its site has thought about how a new client decides, and online booking is the natural next step.

The phone still comes first for vets

75% of veterinarian websites have a tap-to-call link, more than take bookings online. 44.8% offer both, the combination that serves every client: book a checkup online, call about a sick pet. 30.1% offer tap-to-call but no booking, and 4% offer booking with no tap-to-call link.

25.3% of veterinarian websites have a contact form with three or more fields and 12.7% run live chat. At the far end, 18.1% of veterinarian websites offer none of the four direct routes: no booking, no tap-to-call link, no contact form and no chat. A worried owner on one of those sites has to find the number and dial it by hand.

What this means for veterinary practices

If your website takes no bookings online, start with the planned visits: wellness exams, vaccinations and dental cleanings. Keep sick-pet and emergency calls on the phone, with the number tappable at the top of every page. Put a clear Book Now button in the header and on your service pages, linked to the scheduling system your practice already uses.

Add client reviews next to that button. The practices that show reviews are almost three times as likely to take bookings online, and the two work together: reviews persuade a new client, and the booking button lets them act while they are persuaded. A photo of the team and the clinic helps too.

Then walk through the path on a phone the way a new pet owner would, from search to confirmed appointment. Good small business web design puts booking, calling and reviews within reach on every page.
